Black Mercedes chauffeur car for an Essex to Southampton cruise transfer

Essex is on the opposite side of London from Southampton, so the trip to the ship is one of the longer ones in the south east, and one where a single car really earns its keep. We collect from any address in the county and drive round the M25 to your terminal. Fares start at £239 per car from Harlow and £264 from Chelmsford.

Route and journey times from Essex to Southampton

A private cruise transfer from Essex is a long cross-country journey, roughly 110 to 150 miles depending on where you start (for example Brentwood, Chelmsford or Colchester). The route depends on the southern half of the M25 before joining the M3 south towards the coast.

Essex and M25 bottlenecks

  • M25 Junction 28 (Brook Street): Where the A12 joins the M25 is a frequent morning queue.
  • Clacket Lane (M25 Junctions 5 to 6): Freight traffic on this southern stretch can add 30 to 45 minutes when there is an incident.
  • Approach to Southampton: Traffic where the M3 meets the M27 and the A33 into the docks is often heavy on weekend and holiday sailing days.

Door-to-terminal family pickups

On a route this long, especially for families with luggage for a two-week Mediterranean or Caribbean cruise, we arrive early to load bags carefully into an MPV or estate car. Your chauffeur handles the motorway driving, can stop for a comfort break if you need one, and drops you at the luggage drop for your terminal, with no walking or hauling required.

Two ways round London

Every Essex trip to Southampton goes round the M25; the question is which half.

  • South, over the Dartford Crossing. Best for Southend, Basildon, Thurrock, Brentwood and often Chelmsford. You cross the Thames on the QEII Bridge and follow the M25 clockwise past Sevenoaks, the M23 and the A3 to the M3. The crossing charge is included in our fare.
  • North, past the M11 and the M1. Often quicker from Harlow, Epping, Saffron Walden and north-west Essex. The M25 anticlockwise passes the M11, the A1(M), the M1 and Heathrow before reaching the M3.

The driver checks both before setting off and goes the quicker way. Either way, expect two and a half to three hours from most of the county.

When to leave home

Where you liveLeave before your check-in slot starts
Epping, Harlow, Brentwood, Thurrock2 hours 45 minutes
Chelmsford, Basildon, Billericay, Wickford3 hours
Southend, Rayleigh, Colchester, Saffron Walden3 hours 15 minutes
Clacton, Frinton, Harwich, Maldon3 hours 30 minutes

Arriving early in your slot keeps the check-in queue short. On a summer Saturday allow another 15 minutes for holiday traffic on the M25 and M3.

Southampton or Harwich?

Essex has its own cruise port at Harwich, and some lines sail from there to Norway, the Baltic and northern Europe. If your ship leaves from Southampton, though, the car makes the cross-country journey straightforward. Check your ticket for the port: the five Southampton terminals are listed on our cruise terminals page, with postcodes on the terminal postcodes page.

Train, parking or a private car?

The train from Essex goes into Liverpool Street or Fenchurch Street, across London on the Underground to Waterloo, then down to Southampton Central, followed by a taxi to the ship. With cruise luggage that is a long and tiring day.

Driving yourself means about three hours each way, plus parking at the port for the length of your cruise; see our Southampton cruise parking guide for prices.

A private car collects you at home and drops you at the terminal. From Chelmsford, four people sharing an MPV pay about £70 each.

Essex to Southampton for winter and Christmas sailings

From Essex the drive to Southampton is a long arc round the M25, either clockwise through the Dartford Crossing or anticlockwise across the north of London. In winter that choice matters more than usual. Fog can settle over the eastern stretches of the M25 and the Thames estuary on still mornings, and both routes can slow sharply in poor visibility. Your driver looks at the conditions before leaving Chelmsford, Colchester, Brentwood or Southend and chooses the side of the M25 that looks clearer.

Rail from Essex to Southampton means a trip into London and a cross-town transfer to Waterloo, which is tiring with luggage at any time of year and more so when engineering works over Christmas and New Year bring replacement buses. Christmas Day brings little or no rail service whatsoever. With so many Christmas ships sailing in the 19 to 22 December window, a door-to-door car from anywhere in Essex avoids those connections entirely. On the way home, the driver tracks the ship so a weather delay does not leave you standing outside.

  • Driver chooses Dartford or the northern M25 on the day, depending on fog and traffic.
  • Warm car from your door instead of a cold London change.
  • Ship arrival tracked so a stormy docking moves the pickup.
  • Winter cases and coats carried at the fixed fare.

Between cruises, our ExCeL London event chauffeur is handy for winter shows, and the airport transfers page covers Stansted and the other London airports.

Questions

How much is a cruise transfer from Chelmsford to Southampton?

From £264 for a saloon (up to 4 people, 2 large cases) and £281 for an MPV (up to 6 people, 4 cases), per vehicle, one way, including luggage and the Dartford Crossing charge.

How long does it take to drive from Essex to Southampton docks?

From Harlow, Epping and Brentwood about 2½ hours; from Chelmsford and Basildon around 2½ to 2¾ hours; from Southend and Colchester about 3 hours, longer on a busy M25.

Do you go over the Dartford Crossing or round the north of London?

Whichever is quicker on the day. From south Essex the Dartford Crossing is usually best; from west and north Essex the M25 round the north is often quicker. The fixed fare is the same either way.

Is it worth travelling the night before from Essex?

If your check-in slot is before about 12:00 and you live in Colchester, Clacton or the Tendring coast, a night near the port can make the morning more relaxed. For later slots, leaving home in the morning works well.

Can we book the return from the ship to Essex as well?

Yes. The driver tracks the ship and waits at your terminal while you disembark. A return booked with the outward trip costs 1.9 times the single fare.

Do you run Essex pickups for winter sailings from Southampton?

Yes. We collect from Chelmsford, Colchester, Brentwood, Southend and the rest of Essex for winter, festive and repositioning sailings, at a single agreed price per car with cases included. Because the M25 can be slow in winter fog, we usually suggest a slightly earlier pickup than in summer to keep check-in relaxed.

How do you plan the trip home to Essex if our ship is late in winter weather?

Your driver tracks the ship's arrival into Southampton, so if a storm delays docking or changes the berth time, the pickup moves with it. Heading home, the driver chooses between the Dartford Crossing and the northern M25 based on traffic and fog at the time, rather than sticking to a plan made the day before.
