Embarkation day at Southampton: the timeline that works
Book your cruise transfer in under a minute. One price for the whole car, agreed before you travel – no meter, no surge.

Check-in slot, terminal, luggage, and exactly when to leave the airport or London. Read this once and the day runs itself.

The timeline
| Check-in slot | Leave Heathrow | Leave central London | Leave Gatwick |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12:00 | 09:45 | 09:15 | 08:45 |
| 13:30 | 11:15 | 10:45 | 10:15 |
| 15:00 | 12:45 | 12:15 | 11:45 |
Weekday timings with a 30-minute buffer. Summer Saturdays and bank-holiday weekends: add 45 to 60 minutes. Your driver watches the M3 and M27 live and will suggest a change on the morning.
At the terminal
- Kerb drop: porters take the big cases at the car; they go straight to your cabin. Keep medication, documents and valuables in hand luggage.
- Check-in: passports, boarding pass, the health questionnaire if the line uses one. 10 to 30 minutes depending on slot discipline.
- Security: airport style but faster; liquids are fine, alcohol rules vary by line.
- Boarding: by group; cabins usually open from 13:00 to 14:00, cases arrive by 17:00.
Which of the five terminals depends on the ship: see the terminals guide. P&O and Cunard use Ocean and Mayflower most; MSC and Royal Caribbean use City and Horizon; Princess and Celebrity vary.
The mistakes that miss the ship
- A same-day long-haul flight with under four hours between landing and all-aboard. Arrive the day before: see Southampton the day before.
- The train on a strike day or with more than two cases each: Southampton Central is a mile from the terminals with no easy taxi rank at peak.
- Ride-hail from the airport: surge, and drivers who do not know which terminal is which.
- Arriving early: before your slot you wait outside; the terminals enforce slots on busy days.
The car
Woodford Chauffeur Cars cruise transfers are fixed price per vehicle, meet and greet at the airport with a name board, flight tracked, 60 minutes free waiting after landing, and drivers who drop at the right terminal door. Heathrow from £146, Gatwick, London, Stansted, Luton and City. For the return, book the disembarkation pickup for 45 minutes after your self-assist or luggage-tag time.
Adjusting the embarkation-day timeline for winter
The timeline on this page holds for winter sailings, with a few adjustments. Leave a little earlier than the summer figures suggest, because fog on the M3 and M27, frost on country lanes and darkness at the start of the day all slow the first stretch. If you are flying into Heathrow on the morning, assume the landing could slip: de-icing queues and storms elsewhere hold aircraft more often between November and February.
Festive departures are the busiest winter dates. Most Christmas cruises leave from Saturday 19 to Tuesday 22 December 2026, MSC Preziosa sails on Christmas Day, and there is little or no rail service on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. Habits that only occasionally miss a ship in July, like relying on one train or a tight connection, become far riskier then, so the margins in this guide are worth widening.
- Pickup brought forward to cover fog and frost on the way in
- Flight or ship status checked on the morning, not just at booking
- Comfort stop planned for daylight where possible
- Fixed fare unaffected by a slower winter drive
The same careful timing goes into our airport transfers during the rest of the winter.
Questions
What time should I arrive at the cruise terminal?
At your allocated check-in slot, not before; on quiet days they let you in early, on busy Saturdays they do not.
How early do I need to leave Heathrow?
Two hours and a quarter before your slot on a weekday, three hours on a summer Saturday. Your driver will confirm the morning before.
Can we stop for food on the way?
Yes; Winchester services or the town itself are on the route, and a 30-minute stop is built in if you ask.
What if our flight is late?
The car is flight-tracked and waits 60 minutes free. If the delay makes the ship impossible your driver will tell you honestly and we can re-route to the next port when the line allows it.
How should the timeline change for a Christmas Day or other festive sailing?
Widen every margin. Leave earlier, avoid same-day connections that rely on rail, and expect the port to be busy on the main departure dates around 19 to 22 December 2026. On Christmas Day itself there is little or no rail service, so a pre-booked car is the reliable way to reach the terminal on time.
How does the driver keep track of changes on a winter embarkation morning?
We watch your flight if you are coming from an airport and keep an eye on road conditions on the M3 before setting off. If anything shifts, we adjust the pickup and let you know. That way a fog patch or a late landing is handled before it becomes a problem at the dock gate.
