Airport to ship
- Check the last boarding time on your cruise documents, not just the departure time.
- Work backwards: landing time + immigration and baggage (often 45–90 minutes at Heathrow for international arrivals) + drive time (75–95 minutes from Heathrow, 1¾–2¼ hours from Gatwick).
- Too tight? Many passengers fly in the day before and stay near the port or in London. We can collect you from the hotel instead.
Ship to airport
- Disembarkation usually runs through the morning in groups. Your cruise line tells you your group's time a day or two before you dock.
- Book the pickup for about your group's time. Luggage collection in the terminal hall can take a while on busy mornings.
- Flight timing: leave room for the drive plus your airline's check-in and bag-drop deadline. Flights from early afternoon are the comfortable choice from Heathrow.

Winter ship-to-flight and flight-to-ship connections
Joining a cruise to a flight is a timing exercise in any month, but winter narrows the margins. Ships returning to Southampton are usually alongside by about 06:00, yet rough weather at sea can push that back, and fog on the M3 or M25 can slow the drive to Heathrow or Gatwick. After a festive itinerary or a repositioning voyage, where the next leg is often long-haul, we would rather you had an extra hour airside than a tense run up the motorway.
Heading the other way, flights into London are more often held by de-icing or storms elsewhere in Europe during winter, while a ship still closes check-in on schedule. Your driver follows both the flight and the ship, and on the ship-to-airport leg there is no waiting charge while the ship clears, so a slow disembarkation on a sleety morning does not add to the cost.
If you were considering the Gatwick to Portsmouth train as part of a connection, bear in mind that engineering works tend to cluster around Christmas and New Year, with little or no rail service on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. A car between Gatwick and Portsmouth, or between any London airport and the Southampton terminals, is not affected by those closures. It also keeps your luggage in one place rather than lifting it on and off trains and buses in the cold, which counts for a lot at the end of a long trip.
- Ship and flight both tracked, so winter delays at either end are picked up
- No waiting charge while the ship clears on the way to the airport
- Booking both legs together is 1.8 times the single fare
- Room in an MPV for 4 cases when a long trip means heavy bags
For airport runs that have nothing to do with a ship, our Southampton to Heathrow and Southampton to Gatwick transfers run through the winter.
Questions
What time should we book a flight home after a Southampton cruise?
Plan around the disembarkation time your cruise line gives you, then add time to collect luggage, 75–95 minutes to Heathrow (1¾–2¼ hours to Gatwick) and your airline's recommended check-in time. That's why many travellers choose flights leaving from early afternoon onwards.
Can the driver meet us as we come off the ship?
Your driver waits at the terminal's pickup area at the time you book. Choose a pickup time that matches your disembarkation group.
Is a return booking cheaper?
Booked together, a return is quoted at 1.8× the single fare, which is 10% less than two separate one-way bookings.
Can you link a repositioning or festive cruise with a long-haul flight?
Yes. We regularly pair the end of a cruise with a flight from Heathrow or Gatwick, and repositioning voyages and Christmas sailings are no different. In winter we suggest allowing more time than in summer, because both the ship's arrival and the motorway can be affected by weather. Tell us the ship and the flight and we will suggest a realistic pickup.
If my ship comes in late after a winter storm, what happens to my car to the airport?
The driver tracks the ship and simply waits; there is no waiting charge while it clears. Once you are off, they take the quickest sensible route given the conditions on the M3 and M25. If the delay is serious, we will discuss your flight options with you early rather than at the kerb.
Do you run connections over Christmas and New Year?
We do, including on days when there is little or no rail service, such as Christmas Day and Boxing Day. With Christmas Day on Friday 25 December 2026 and New Year's Day on Friday 1 January 2027, festive dates fill early, so booking both legs at once is the safest way to secure the car.

Sailing from Portsmouth: train to Waterloo or a transfer?
Portsmouth has grown into a cruise port in its own right, with Virgin Voyages among the lines sailing from there. Passengers ask whether to take the train to Waterloo or book a transfer, and whether you can get there by train from Gatwick.
- From London: South Western Railway runs from Waterloo to Portsmouth, typically 1 hour 40 minutes to just over 2 hours. You then need a taxi from Portsmouth Harbour or Portsmouth and Southsea station to the International Port.
- From Gatwick: Southern trains run to Portsmouth Harbour in about 1 hour 45 minutes. Check whether your train is direct, as some journeys need a change.
- From Southampton: If you are staying near Southampton or arriving there, Portsmouth is a short drive along the M27.
A car makes most sense with heavy luggage, a group of four, or a tight boarding window. It avoids a change of train, the walk at the station and the taxi queue at the port.
Q: Is there a train from Gatwick to Portsmouth?
A: Yes. Southern runs from Gatwick Airport to Portsmouth Harbour in about 1 hour 45 minutes. You still need a taxi from the station to the cruise terminal.
