Southampton cruise terminal to London Southend Airport

London Southend is the smallest of the London airports and the furthest from Southampton: about 131–132 miles, most of it on the M3 and M25. If your flight home leaves from there, a private car is the only way to go from ship to check-in without three changes. Fares start at £268 per car, luggage included.

The route: M3, M25 and the Dartford Crossing
From the cruise terminals the car heads up the M3 to the M25, then round London to Essex, usually anticlockwise over the Dartford Crossing and on via the A13 or the A127 to Southend. The crossing charge is included in the fare. If the crossing is blocked, the driver can go clockwise round the north of London instead; it is a little longer, and the fixed fare stays the same.
Plan on 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes from the ship. The usual slow points are the M25 between the M3 and the A3, the approach to Dartford in the morning, and the A127 into Southend at rush hour.
Booking a flight home from Southend
Southend's small size works in your favour: the walk from drop-off to check-in is short and security is rarely the bottleneck. The long drive is what sets the earliest flight you can make.

easyJet reopened its base at London Southend in 2025 and flies from there to a range of European cities and holiday destinations; route lists change by season, so check what is flying in your month. If no Southend flight fits, compare Heathrow and Gatwick, which are both much closer to the port.
Going home to south Essex instead?
Plenty of people search for Southend because they live nearby rather than because they are flying. If you are heading home to Southend-on-Sea, Leigh-on-Sea, Rayleigh or Basildon after your cruise, the car simply takes you to your door. Our Essex to Southampton cruise terminal page lists fares by town.
Southend Airport to the ship
Flying into Southend for a cruise? Give us your flight number and the driver meets you in arrivals, tracks any delay and drives you to your terminal's set-down area. With about three hours on the road, land by mid-morning for an afternoon check-in slot, or fly in the day before.
Ship to Southend Airport in winter: the long run round to the Thames estuary
At 131–132 miles, Southampton to Southend is one of the longest airport transfers we run from the cruise port, and it crosses the Thames at Dartford. In winter, the estuary and the approaches to the crossing are prone to fog, and the M25 can be slow on either side of it on a dark morning. Your driver plans the timing around the forecast and tracks the ship from the night before, with no waiting charge while it clears.
Ships usually berth at Southampton by about 06:00, but storms can delay arrival or move the berth slot. Because the drive itself is long, we recommend a generous gap before any winter flight from Southend, and booking with plenty of notice for the festive return dates. If the ship is late, you will get an honest arrival estimate once you are in the car, so you can talk to the airline early rather than at the desk.
For passengers flying on after a festive itinerary or a transatlantic crossing, Southend's compact terminal means a short walk from the car to check-in, which is welcome with winter luggage. Fares are fixed per vehicle, luggage included, and agreed before travel, so a slow M25 on a foggy morning does not change what you pay. Book the outbound leg with us as well and the return costs less than two separate singles.
- Fog around Dartford and on the M25 built into the timing
- No waiting charge while your ship clears after a weather delay
- Drop-off near the terminal entrance, out of the estuary wind
- Saloon for two large cases, or MPV for four on longer winter voyages

easyJet is the main airline, with a base at Southend since 2025 and routes across Europe. Check the current timetable, as the route list changes by season.
Is there a train from Southend Airport to London?
Yes, Southend Airport has its own station with trains to London Liverpool Street. It helps if you are spending time in London, but from the cruise port the train means crossing London with your cases.
Can you drive us from a winter or festive cruise to Southend Airport?
Yes. We collect from any of Southampton's five terminals after festive itineraries, winter sailings and repositioning voyages, and drive round the M25 to Southend. It is a long transfer, so book early for late December and early January returns. However long the M25 takes, the fixed per-vehicle fare you agreed does not move.
How do you handle fog or storms on a same-day Southend flight?
The driver follows the ship's live position and waits while it clears, without charging for the wait. On the road, they watch for fog at the Dartford crossing and on the M25 and keep you updated, so if your flight time starts to look tight you can contact the airline while there are still options.
