Southampton cruise terminal to Euston station

Euston is the London end of the West Coast Main Line and of the Caledonian Sleeper, so it is where many cruise passengers from the Midlands, the North West and Scotland start and finish. A private car runs between Euston and all five Southampton cruise terminals, about 82–83 miles, from £197 per car with your luggage on board.

Caledonian Sleeper to your cruise
If you live in Scotland, the Caledonian Sleeper turns a long day's travel into a night's sleep. The Lowlander runs from Edinburgh and Glasgow and the Highlander from Inverness, Aberdeen and Fort William, and both arrive at Euston early in the morning. A car from Euston then has you at Southampton by late morning, with nothing to carry beyond the platform.
- Give us the train. We note the sleeper's scheduled arrival, the driver watches for delays and waits on the concourse with a name board.
- Breakfast first if you like. If you would rather have breakfast near the station before the drive, tell us what time you want to leave and we set the pick-up for then.
- Plenty of margin. Even with a slow morning on the roads out of London, a car leaving Euston at 08:30 reaches the port by about 11:00, ahead of most check-in slots.
Going home the same way? The sleepers leave Euston late in the evening, so after a morning disembarkation you have a full day in London. We can drop your luggage and you at a hotel, a left-luggage desk or Euston itself.
Avanti and London Northwestern trains after a cruise
Avanti West Coast runs from Euston to Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Chester, North Wales, Preston, Lancaster, the Lake District and Glasgow. London Northwestern Railway runs slower trains to Milton Keynes, Northampton and Birmingham. Most cruise passengers heading home this way book an advance fare on a specific train, so the question is which train you can safely make:
| How you leave the ship | In the car | At Euston (typical) | Book a train from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-disembarkation | 08:00–08:30 | 10:15–11:15 | 12:30 |
| Early luggage tag | 08:45–09:15 | 11:00–12:00 | 13:30 |
| Standard luggage tag | 09:30–10:15 | 11:45–13:00 | 14:30 |
If you are travelling to Birmingham, compare the car straight home with the train: our Birmingham to Southampton cruise terminal page has the fares for the full journey.
Getting in and out of Euston during the HS2 works
Euston is being rebuilt for HS2, and the roads, taxi rank and set-down areas around the station have changed during the works. Rather than send you to a spot that may have moved, the driver checks access on the morning, sets down at the closest permitted point to the main concourse and helps you in with the cases. For a pick-up, the driver meets you inside, under the departure boards, and walks you to the car.
Euston Square and Euston Underground stations are both close by, and King's Cross St Pancras is about ten minutes' walk east along Euston Road.
Is the car worth it over the train?
There is no direct train from Southampton to Euston. You would take a taxi to Southampton Central, a fast train to Waterloo (about 1 hour 20 minutes) and then the Northern line to Euston, which means at least three changes with luggage. For a couple or family, an MPV shared by four people works out at about £53 each and takes you door to door. If you are on your own with a small bag, the train is the cheaper way to do it.
Ship to Euston in winter: West Coast trains, Sleeper nights and holiday engineering
Passengers heading for the Midlands, the North West or Scotland after a cruise often book the ship-to-Euston run, and winter changes the calculation. Engineering works on the West Coast line tend to cluster around Christmas and New Year, sometimes with replacement buses on sections of the route, and the building works around the station can slow the final approach. Check your onward ticket carefully before choosing a train time, and allow more margin than you would in July.
Arrival back in port is normally around 06:00, yet bad weather in the Channel can keep a ship waiting outside or push back its berth. Your driver tracks the ship, waits while it clears and then heads up the M3 into London. If you are joining the overnight Caledonian Sleeper, a late docking matters less and there is time for lunch in town; for a daytime Avanti service, we will tell you honestly whether the booked train is still realistic.
If the West Coast line is closed altogether during the festive works, ask us about driving the whole way north instead. The fare is fixed per vehicle, and with a heavy load of winter luggage it can make more sense than wrestling cases on and off a replacement bus somewhere in the Midlands on a dark December evening. A driven run north also means your bags go in once at the terminal and come out once at your door.
- Driver tracks your ship and moves the Southampton pickup to the actual docking time
- Advice on which train is still realistic if a storm delays arrival
- Set-down close to the station entrance so cases are not dragged through the cold
- Warm car for the run into London after an early-morning disembarkation
When festive engineering works close the West Coast line, our London to Manchester chauffeur and London to Birmingham route offer a door-to-door alternative.
Questions
How much is Southampton cruise terminal to Euston by car?
From £197 one way in a saloon (up to 4 people, 2 large cases) and from £212 in an MPV (up to 6 people, 4 cases), per vehicle. The fare is fixed when you book.
Can I take the Caledonian Sleeper to Euston and go straight to my cruise?
Yes, and it is one of the best ways to reach a Southampton cruise from Scotland. The sleeper reaches Euston early in the morning; the driver meets you off the train and you are at the port well inside a typical check-in slot.
How long does the drive take from the cruise terminal to Euston?
About 82–83 miles: around 2 hours on clear roads and 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 45 on a weekday morning.
Which Avanti train can we catch after disembarking?
With self-disembarkation, trains from about 12:30 are realistic; with an early luggage tag, 13:30; with a standard tag, 14:30 or later. On Avanti advance fares, choose a train you will make comfortably.
Where does the driver set down at Euston?
At the nearest permitted set-down point to the main concourse. Access around Euston changes with the HS2 works, so the driver confirms the exact spot on the day.
Can you get us from a Christmas or New Year cruise to Euston for a train north?
Yes. Festive itineraries return through late December and early January, and we meet passengers at all five Southampton terminals for the drive to Euston. Because rail engineering is common over the holidays and there is little or no rail service on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, check your onward train is running before fixing the car time.
How do you handle a storm-delayed ship when we have a fixed train time from Euston?
The driver follows the vessel's position and berthing updates, not just the scheduled 06:00 arrival. If the ship is running late, we tell you early whether your booked departure from Euston is still achievable, so you can look at a later train or consider driving further north instead. Advance rail tickets are usually train-specific, so that early warning helps.
