Booking your flight home from Luton

Luton is a short-haul airport: easyJet, Wizz Air and Ryanair fly most of the routes, with holiday flights from TUI. Bag drop on those airlines usually closes 40 minutes to an hour before departure, which is what makes an afternoon flight on disembarkation day possible.

Standard luggage tag09:30–10:1511:45–12:4514:30 or later15:00 or later

The table allows about 2 hours 20 minutes on the road and an hour or more at the airport before departure. Luton's security queues vary a lot through the day, so if you are flying in the school holidays, take the later column. For how disembarkation actually works, see the earliest flight after a Southampton cruise.

The drive: M3, M25, M1

The route is simple: north up the M3, clockwise on the M25 past Heathrow, then up the M1 to junction 10 and along the airport approach road. It is about 95–96 miles from the Eastern or Western Docks, and Fleet services on the M3 is the place to stop if anyone needs a break.

The section of the M25 between the M4 and the M1 is the one most likely to hold you up, especially on weekday mornings. Drivers follow live traffic, and the fixed fare stays the same whichever way they go.

Drop-off at Luton Airport

Luton has a single passenger terminal. Cars set down in the drop-off zone next to it, which carries a short-stay charge; that charge is built into our fare, so there is nothing to pay on the day. If someone in your party needs assistance through the airport, tell us when you book so the driver can set you down as close as possible to the assistance point. The Luton DART shuttle only links the terminal with Luton Airport Parkway station, so it does not affect a car drop-off.

Luton to the ship at the start of your cruise

If you are flying into Luton to board a ship, the driver tracks your flight, meets you in arrivals and loads the luggage. Allow about 2 to 2½ hours to the port and plan to land at least four hours before the end of your check-in slot. Outbound fares and meeting details are on our Stansted, Luton and London City to Southampton page.

Car or train from the ship to Luton?

By rail it is a taxi to Southampton Central, a train to Waterloo, a Thameslink or East Midlands Railway train north from St Pancras or Farringdon after a cross-London Tube ride, then the DART from Luton Airport Parkway: four or five stages with luggage and around three and a half hours. A car shared by four in an MPV costs about £54 each and is a single leg.

Southampton ship to Luton Airport through the winter season

Plenty of passengers coming off winter cruises fly home or onward from Luton. The 95–96 mile drive runs up the M3, round the M25 and up the M1, and in winter the busy junctions around Heathrow and the merge onto the M1 can be slow in fog or heavy rain. Your driver monitors the ship from the night before and does not charge for waiting while it clears, so the drive starts when you are ready rather than when the timetable says.

Ships usually reach their berth by about 06:00, but storms in the Channel can delay that by hours and occasionally change the berthing time altogether. For a winter return, leave a bigger gap before your flight than you might in summer. If the ship is late, the driver will tell you as soon as you are in the car whether your departure is still comfortable, giving you time to talk to the airline while there are options.

  • Ship tracked, with no waiting charge while it clears after a stormy crossing
  • Route via the M25 and M1 chosen on the day around fog and roadworks
  • Heated car straight to the Luton drop-off, with no shuttle bus in the cold
  • MPV for up to six people and four cases on family winter trips

For flights through the rest of winter, our Luton Airport to Oxford chauffeur and wider airport transfers run all year.

Questions

How much is a transfer from Southampton cruise terminal to Luton Airport?

From £201 one way in a saloon (up to 4 people, 2 large cases) and from £216 in an MPV (up to 6 people, 4 cases), per vehicle, including the airport drop-off charge and waiting at the ship.

How long is the drive from Southampton cruise port to Luton?

About 95–96 miles. Allow 2 hours on a clear road and 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 45 minutes on a weekday, when the M25 between the M3 and the M1 is busiest.

What time flight can I catch from Luton after disembarking?

If you self-disembark and fly short-haul with hand luggage, about 13:00 is realistic. With checked bags, or a standard luggage tag, book 14:30 or later.

Where are we dropped at Luton Airport?

At the drop-off zone beside the terminal. The airport's drop-off charge is included in the fare, and the driver unloads the cases for you.

Do you also do Luton Airport to the ship?

Yes, at the same fare. The driver tracks your flight and meets you in arrivals. See our page on Stansted, Luton and London City to Southampton for the outbound details.

Can you take us from a festive or winter cruise straight to Luton?

Yes. Passengers return from Christmas and New Year itineraries and selected winter sailings throughout December and January, and we collect from all five terminals for the drive to Luton. The fare is per vehicle, luggage included, agreed when you book. If you are also flying into Luton to join the cruise, booking both legs together costs less than two singles.

How do you allow for winter weather when the ship and the flight are on the same day?

The driver tracks the ship's actual berthing, not just its schedule, and waits without charge while it clears. On the road, they factor in fog or heavy traffic on the M25 and M1 and keep you informed, so if the gap to your flight is shrinking you know early enough to speak to the airline.
