Hertfordshire to Southampton cruise terminal transfers

Hertfordshire sits on the M25 and the M1, which gives it a straightforward run to Southampton round the west of London. We collect from any address in the county and drive you and your luggage to the ship's terminal. Fares start at £175 per car from Watford and £184 from St Albans, fixed when you book.
Route planning from Hertfordshire to the south coast
From commuter towns such as St Albans, Watford and Hatfield, a transfer to the Southampton docks covers roughly 95 to 110 miles. Drivers avoid central London, taking the western side of the M25 before joining the M3 south.
Hertfordshire and M25 bottlenecks
- M25 Junctions 16 to 15 (M40 and M4 interchanges): This western stretch is often unpredictable mid-morning. If live traffic shows serious delays, drivers can switch early to the M40 and A34 route.
- Winchester (M3 Junction 9 / A34): Freight joining from the Midlands often slows this junction near the coast, adding up to 20 minutes of stop-start driving.
Residential pickups in Hertfordshire
Your chauffeur arrives at your driveway about 15 minutes before departure. For this route we use estate cars and MPVs so multi-week cruise luggage, garment carriers and golf bags fit safely in the boot.

From Herts to the M3
The route from almost anywhere in Hertfordshire is the same in outline: onto the M25, anticlockwise round the west of London, and down the M3 to Southampton.
- South-west Herts (Watford, Rickmansworth, Bushey, Kings Langley): the M25 is minutes away, at junction 19 or 20, and it is about 1 hour 45 minutes to the port.
- Mid Herts (St Albans, Harpenden, Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted): the M1, the A41 or the A414 to the M25, then round to the M3, about 2 hours.
- East and north Herts (Hertford, Ware, Welwyn, Stevenage, Hitchin, Letchworth, Bishop's Stortford): the A1(M) or the A10 to the M25 and round. Bishop's Stortford is close to the M11 and the driver may go round the east instead if that is quicker.
The stretch of the M25 between the M40 and the M3, past Heathrow, is the busiest motorway in the country at peak times, so we plan pick-ups with that in mind. The fixed fare is the same whatever the route.
Pick-up times

Train, parking or a private car?
By train you would go into Euston, St Pancras, King's Cross or Liverpool Street, cross London to Waterloo and take the train to Southampton Central, then a taxi to the ship. From Watford Junction, Southern trains through west London reach Clapham Junction, where you can change for Southampton, which avoids the Underground but still means two changes with luggage.
Driving yourself is around two hours each way plus parking at the port for the whole cruise; our cruise parking guide has the prices.
A private car is one journey from your door. From St Albans, four people sharing an MPV pay about £50 each.
After your cruise
The driver tracks the ship on disembarkation morning, waits at the terminal while you leave and brings you home, usually by early afternoon. Book both legs together and the return costs 1.9 times the single fare.
Hertfordshire to the cruise terminals through the winter months
From Watford, St Albans or Hemel Hempstead the route runs west and south round the M25 to the M3, and in winter the orbital stretch past the M1 and M40 junctions is where morning fog tends to gather. Leaving in the dark is normal for an early boarding slot between November and February, so drivers read the forecast the evening before and set off with a margin. Villages off the main roads, from the Harpenden lanes to the countryside around Tring, can stay icy well after sunrise, and we allow for that too.
A train from Hertfordshire to the ship means getting into London, crossing to Waterloo, catching a Southampton service and then finding a taxi at Southampton Central. Over Christmas and New Year that chain is fragile: engineering works and replacement buses cluster in the holiday weeks, and on Christmas Day and Boxing Day there is little or no rail service at all. For the festive departures between 19 and 22 December, or MSC Preziosa's Christmas Day sailing, a car from your drive to the terminal removes three changes and a great deal of lifting.
- Driver checks M25 and M3 fog warnings and traffic before collecting you
- Warm car at the door instead of a cold platform at St Albans City with cases
- MPV seats six with four large cases for families off on a Christmas sailing
- On return the driver follows your ship, so a storm-delayed docking just moves the pickup
When the cruise season is over, Hertfordshire travellers use our airport transfers for winter-sun flights, and our corporate chauffeur service for January business travel.
Questions
How much is a cruise transfer from St Albans to Southampton?
From £184 for a saloon (up to 4 people, 2 large cases) and £200 for an MPV (up to 6 people, 4 cases), per vehicle, one way, with luggage.
How long is the drive from Hertfordshire to Southampton cruise port?
From Watford, Rickmansworth and Bushey about 1 hour 45 minutes; from St Albans, Harpenden and Berkhamsted about 2 hours; from Hertford, Stevenage and Hitchin around 2 hours 15; from Bishop's Stortford about 2½ hours, before traffic.
Which route does the driver take from Hertfordshire?
Normally the M25 anticlockwise from the M1 or the A1(M), past the M40 and Heathrow to the M3. It is the busiest part of the M25, so the driver checks traffic before leaving.
Is there a train from Hertfordshire to Southampton?
Not directly. You would travel into London, cross to Waterloo and take a train to Southampton Central, or change at Clapham Junction from the line through Watford Junction. With cruise luggage the car is much easier.
Do you also cover Hemel Hempstead, Welwyn and Letchworth?
Yes, along with every other town and village in the county. The booking page prices your exact address.
Do you collect in Hertfordshire for festive and winter cruises from Southampton?
We do, from Watford and St Albans out to Hitchin, Hertford and the villages in between. Festive cruises mostly sail between Saturday 19 and Tuesday 22 December, so those mornings book up early. We also cover selected winter sailings, Queen Mary 2's regular transatlantic crossings and short New Year breaks, all at a fixed per-vehicle fare agreed in advance.
How do you handle a late ship when bringing us back to Hertfordshire in winter?
Your driver tracks the vessel rather than the timetable. Ships are usually alongside by about 06:00, but winter gales can hold one outside the port or shift its berthing time. The pickup moves accordingly, and the driver will be at the terminal when you come through with your cases, ready for the run back round the M25.
