The drive from Kent

Almost every Kent journey to Southampton uses the southern half of the M25:

  • West Kent (Sevenoaks, Westerham, Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells): the A21 to the M25 at junction 5, then clockwise past the M23 and the A3 to the M3. From Tunbridge Wells there is also a cross-country route through Sussex and Hampshire which the driver may use if the M25 is slow.
  • Mid Kent (Maidstone, West Malling, the Medway towns): the M20 or M2 and the M26 to the M25, then round to the M3.
  • North Kent (Dartford, Gravesend, Swanley): straight onto the M25 at junctions 1 to 3 and clockwise to the M3.
  • East Kent (Canterbury, Ashford, Folkestone, Whitstable): the M20 or the A2 and M2 back towards London, then the M25. It is the longest leg in the south east, around 2½ to 3 hours.

The M25 between junctions 5 and 12 carries much of the traffic heading for Gatwick and the M3, so the driver checks it before setting off. The fixed fare stays the same whichever way the car goes.

Leaving home on embarkation day

Where you liveLeave before your check-in slot starts
Sevenoaks, Westerham, Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells2 hours 30 minutes
Dartford, Gravesend, Maidstone, West Malling2 hours 45 minutes
Ashford, Canterbury, Folkestone, Thanet3 hours 15 minutes

These leave room for a normal morning on the M25. If your cruise starts on a summer Saturday, add 15 minutes. For an early check-in slot from East Kent, some passengers prefer to travel the evening before and stay near the port; see hotels near the port for the night before.

Why not the train?

There is no direct train from Kent to Southampton. From most towns the rail journey runs into London on Southeastern, across to Waterloo and out on South Western Railway, or round the south via Redhill and Guildford. That is three or four hours and two or three changes before the taxi to the ship. Driving yourself means paying for parking at the port for the whole cruise and a long drive home on disembarkation day.

A private car is a single journey door to terminal. From Maidstone, four people sharing an MPV pay about £62 each, and the driver does the M25.

Home to Kent after the cruise

On disembarkation morning the driver tracks your ship and waits at the terminal while you leave, with no waiting charge. From west Kent you are usually home by early afternoon; from east Kent by mid-afternoon.

Price the ship to Sevenoaks

Kent to Southampton cruise transfers in winter and over Christmas

From Sevenoaks, Maidstone, Tunbridge Wells or Canterbury the drive to the ship goes west round the M25 and down the M3, and it is a long one. In winter, the North Downs section of the M25 can be blanketed in fog first thing, while Weald lanes around the villages often hold black ice until mid-morning. Our drivers check conditions before they leave and pad the timing, because a winter boarding slot works exactly like a summer one: miss check-in and the ship sails without you.

Christmas is when Kent travellers feel the gaps in public transport most. A rail journey to Southampton from most of the county means getting into London first, and on Christmas Day and Boxing Day there is little or no rail service. Even the days either side can be patchy, with engineering works and replacement buses common over the festive period. If you are joining MSC Preziosa on Friday 25 December, or one of the many sailings from 19 to 22 December, a car from home is the practical way of arriving with your cases.

For January returns, ships usually berth by about 06:00, but a stormy crossing can make one late. Your driver tracks the ship and waits at whichever terminal it uses, from the Ocean Terminal at Dock Gate 4 to Mayflower at Dock Gate 20. That matters for Kent, because a late start means meeting the M25 at a busier hour, and the driver can tell you honestly how long the trip home will take.

  • Pickup from any Kent address, from the Medway towns to the coast
  • Extra time allowed for fog on the M25 and frost on Weald lanes
  • Ship arrival tracked so the long drive home starts when you are actually off
  • Heated cabin and room for winter coats; the MPV holds four large cases

Kent clients travelling outside the cruise season use our Gatwick executive transfer and Biggin Hill chauffeur for winter flights from the airports nearest the county.

Questions

How much is a cruise transfer from Kent to Southampton?

It depends on the town. From Sevenoaks it starts at £202, from Maidstone £232 and from Canterbury £282 for a saloon, one way per vehicle. The table lists fares for the larger towns and the booking page prices your exact address.

How long does it take to drive from Kent to Southampton cruise port?

From west Kent (Sevenoaks, Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells) about 2 hours; from Maidstone and Dartford 2 to 2½ hours; from Canterbury, Ashford and Folkestone 2½ to 3 hours.

Which way does the driver go from Kent to Southampton?

Usually the M25 clockwise from junction 5 or junction 2 round to the M3. From Tunbridge Wells the driver may go cross-country instead. The route follows live traffic; the fixed fare does not change.

Is there a train from Kent to Southampton?

Not directly. Most journeys go into London, across to Waterloo and out again, or round via Redhill and Guildford. With cruise luggage the car is much simpler.

Can you bring us home to Kent after the cruise?

Yes. The driver tracks your ship, waits while you disembark and drives you home. Book both legs together and the return costs 1.9 times the single fare.

Can you collect from Kent on Christmas Day for a cruise?

Yes, and it is one of the days a private car makes most sense, since there is little or no rail service. MSC Preziosa sails from Southampton on Christmas Day, Friday 25 December 2026. Tell us your village or town and your terminal, and we will agree a fixed fare and a departure time with plenty of margin for the M25.

Do you take Kent passengers to winter or repositioning cruises outside December?

We do. Autumn repositioning voyages, such as Celebrity Apex leaving for Port Canaveral on 18 October, and Queen Mary 2's regular transatlantic crossings both draw passengers from Kent, and selected winter-sun sailings run through the colder months. The vehicles, fixed fares and booking process are the same all year.

How does the driver know if our ship is running late on a stormy morning?

Before leaving Kent, the driver checks the ship's live position and expected berthing time, and keeps checking en route. If weather in the Channel holds it back, the collection is moved to match. Because the journey home is long, the driver will also tell you roughly when to expect to reach your door once you are in the car.
