Things to do in Southampton the day before your cruise
Most cruise lines say arrive the day before. Here is how to spend it, where to sleep near the ship, and the fixed-price car that gets you there from Heathrow or London.
Book your cruise transfer in under a minute. One price for the whole car, agreed before you travel – no meter, no surge.

Where to stay near the ships
- Ocean Village (Southampton Harbour Hotel, the marina): 5 minutes to Ocean Terminal, 10 to City and Mayflower, the best pre-cruise breakfast view.
- Grand Harbour / Leonardo Royal: on West Quay Road, walkable to City Cruise Terminal, the classic pre-cruise hotel.
- Premier Inn West Quay, Holiday Inn Herbert Walker Avenue, Novotel: cheaper, all within a mile of every terminal.
- Winchester or the New Forest if you want a country night before sailing: 20 to 30 minutes from the port, see the stopover guide.
Things to see in an afternoon
The Titanic trail: SeaCity Museum (the Titanic story, 90 minutes), the Titanic Engineers' Memorial in East Park, the Grapes pub where the crew drank. The old walls: the Bargate, God's House Tower, the Tudor House and Garden, all inside a 20-minute walk. Ocean Village and Town Quay for a drink watching the ships. If you have the whole day, the Isle of Wight ferry from Town Quay to Cowes is 25 minutes each way.
Where to eat
Oxford Street (Southampton's, not London's) for the restaurants: the Oxford Brasserie, Ennio's, the White Star Tavern. Ocean Village for waterside chains and the marina. Bedford Place for cocktails. Book for the evening before a Saturday sailing, when 10,000 passengers are in town.
Getting to Southampton, fixed price
Woodford Chauffeur Cars's cruise cars are priced per vehicle with luggage space for two large cases per passenger, meet and greet at the airport and a driver who knows the terminals: Heathrow to Southampton from £146, Gatwick, central London and Stansted, Luton and London City. On the day, the car can drop at the hotel first and take you to the ship next morning, or go straight to the terminal.
A day in Southampton before a winter or festive cruise
Southampton in December is a different city from the summer one most of this guide describes. Daylight is short, so save any walk along the old town walls or the waterfront for the middle of the day and keep indoor options up your sleeve for rain. If you are joining one of the festive cruises that leave between Saturday 19 and Tuesday 22 December 2026, expect the hotels and restaurants to be busy with fellow passengers doing just what you are.
Coming down the day before also takes the strain off the journey. Fog on the M3 or a late landing matters far less when the ship sails tomorrow. We can bring you from Heathrow, Gatwick or London in the afternoon, and on boarding day the hop from your hotel to the terminal is a short one, through Dock Gate 4, 10 or 20 depending on the ship.
- Afternoon arrival planned around winter daylight so you can still see something
- Flight tracked, so a weather delay just pushes back your evening
- Short morning run to the correct dock gate on boarding day
- Room for cases and coats, with luggage included in the fare
If you want a quieter base than the city centre, our Chewton Glen chauffeur serves the New Forest, and Southampton to London runs all year.
Questions
Which cruise terminal will my ship use?
Southampton has five: Ocean, City, Mayflower, QEII and Horizon. Your cruise line confirms it two to four weeks before sailing; see the terminals guide.
Should I arrive the day before?
If you are flying in from outside Europe, yes; the ship will not wait for a delayed flight. From Heathrow on a same-day flight landing before 09:00 a car makes the ship comfortably for a 13:00 to 16:00 embarkation.
Can the driver take us to the hotel tonight and the ship tomorrow?
Yes, as two bookings, or one with an overnight stop; message WhatsApp with the sailing date.
Is luggage limited?
A saloon takes 2 large cases and 2 cabin bags; an MPV 6 large cases; a 9-seater 9. Tell us the count at booking.
Do you run transfers for festive sailings when we are spending the night in Southampton first?
Yes. Plenty of Christmas cruise passengers come down a day early, and we can do both parts: the airport or London run on the day before, and the short morning trip to the terminal. Hotels near the port are busy around 19 to 22 December 2026, so arrange the room before the car.
If our flight lands late the day before because of winter weather, will the driver still meet us?
Yes. We follow your flight number, so whatever time it actually lands, the driver is there. Arriving late the evening before a sailing is far less stressful than landing late on the morning itself, which is exactly why a day-early trip suits the winter months.
