Transfer logistics from Gatwick Airport (LGW)
A private transfer from Gatwick to the Southampton cruise docks is roughly 85 to 90 miles. Drivers avoid central London by taking the M23 north to the M25, heading west round the southern side of the orbital and then down the M3 to the coast.
Gatwick and M25 bottlenecks
- Reigate Hill (M25 Junction 8): Traffic often bunches here mid-morning with merging lanes and freight.
- Wisley (M25 Junction 10): Works at the A3 junction can cause sudden stop-start traffic. Drivers watch live traffic and choose an alternative such as the A25 if there is a serious delay.
Airport meet and greet
Whether you land at the North or South Terminal, we track your flight and time the pickup to your actual landing rather than the schedule. Your chauffeur meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board, helps with your luggage and takes you to the car, then drops you at your terminal's luggage drop within your cruise check-in window.

The route
Gatwick to Southampton is roughly 90–94 miles. Depending on traffic, drivers take the M23 and M25 round to the M3, or head west across Sussex and Hampshire on A-roads towards the M27. Allow 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes.

Good to know
- The Western Docks terminals come out slightly cheaper than the Eastern Docks ones from Gatwick. That's because the engine applies a volume discount once a fare passes a set amount.
- Families of up to 6 with big cases: the MPV from £208 fits everyone and the luggage.
- Returning to Gatwick after the cruise costs the same as the outbound leg.
What the fare covers
- The whole vehicle, not a seat. Four people in an MPV from £208 works out at about £52 each.
- Cruise luggage. A saloon takes up to 4 people with 2 large cases. An MPV takes up to 6 people with 4 cases, which is the safer choice if anyone is carrying formal wear.
- Flight tracking. Your driver plans around the time you actually land, so an early or late arrival needs no phone call.
- A licensed driver who meets you at arrivals and drops you at your ship's dock gate, not at the port entrance.
- Fuel, tolls and waiting time. The fixed fare is confirmed before you pay, by card or to the driver.
Returns booked at the same time are quoted at 1.8× the single fare. Get London Transfer Ltd holds Transport for London private hire operator licence 11588.
Transfer, coach or train from Gatwick
A private car is not the cheapest way from Gatwick to the Port of Southampton. Trains run to Southampton Central and coaches to Southampton Coach Station, and both cost a fraction of a transfer. Neither leaves you at your ship. From either station you still need a taxi into the docks with your cases, and on a Saturday turnaround morning that queue is real.
The case for the car is embarkation day itself: £193 covers the whole vehicle for the 90–94 mile drive, about £90 each for two, or about £57 each for four in an MPV at £208. The driver tracks the flight, the luggage goes in once, and you are dropped at the right dock gate. If you are arriving a day early and travelling light, take the train and keep the difference.
Gatwick to the Southampton docks through autumn and winter
The rail route from Gatwick to Southampton already means changing trains, and over Christmas and New Year engineering works and rail replacement buses tend to bunch up on the lines in between. On Christmas Day and Boxing Day there is little or no rail service at all. A car from the North or South Terminal simply goes round the M25 and down the M3, which is why guests flying in from Europe or the Canaries for a winter cruise often book one.
December embarkations are concentrated into a few days. Most festive cruises leave Southampton from Saturday 19 to Tuesday 22 December 2026, and MSC Preziosa departs on Christmas Day. Gatwick arrivals on those mornings are busy, and with short daylight a good part of the drive may be in darkness or low sun. We plan the pickup around that and take you to the terminal entrance for your ship rather than a shared coach bay.
Autumn is quieter but still worth a mention. Repositioning voyages at the end of the season, such as Celebrity Apex leaving for Port Canaveral on 18 October, draw passengers through Gatwick who want a straightforward road journey with plenty of room for the extra luggage a transatlantic trip involves. October weather is changeable rather than wintry, but heavy rain and early dusk still slow the M25, so we plan those pickups with the same care as a December one and keep an eye on your flight from departure.
- No Clapham Junction change and no replacement bus during holiday engineering works
- Your flight into either Gatwick terminal is tracked, with the pickup moved if it lands late
- MPV for up to 6 people and 4 cases when winter layers fill the bags
- Fare fixed in advance, whatever the M25 is doing on the day

Questions about this route
How far is Gatwick from Southampton cruise terminal?
About 90–94 miles by road, usually 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes.
What does a Gatwick to Southampton cruise transfer cost?
From £193 one way in a saloon, £208 in an MPV and £253 in an V Class, per vehicle including luggage.
Do you pick up from both Gatwick terminals?
Yes. Choose North or South Terminal when you add your flight details on the booking page.
Where does the driver meet us at Gatwick?
At arrivals. Your licensed driver meets you at arrivals or at your door, helps with the cruise cases and takes you to your ship's dock gate rather than the port entrance.
Is the price per person or per vehicle?
Per vehicle, one way, with luggage included. Four people in an MPV from £208 works out at about £52 each. Returns booked at the same time are quoted at 1.8× the single fare.
How many people and cases fit in each vehicle?
A saloon takes up to 4 people with 2 large cases. An MPV takes up to 6 people with 4 cases. Cruise suitcases are usually large, so for 2–3 people with big cases, or anyone carrying formal wear bags, the MPV is the safer choice.
Which dock gate will we be dropped at?
Ocean Cruise Terminal (berth 46) and QEII Cruise Terminal (berths 38–39) are in the Eastern Docks, reached through Dock Gate 4 off Canute Road. City, Horizon and Mayflower are in the Western Docks, a few minutes further along the waterfront. Tell us the ship and we take you to the right one.
Is a transfer cheaper than parking at the port?
Not usually, if you own a car. Seven nights at the terminal car parks runs about £140–£160, and off-site parking with a shuttle about £65–£95, against roughly £324 for a return transfer from Gatwick. The transfer wins when you are flying in, when the car is needed at home, or when you would rather not drive on embarkation morning.
Can we pay the driver instead of paying by card?
Yes. The fixed fare for your journey is shown before you pay, and you can pay by card or choose to pay the driver.
Can I book a Gatwick to Southampton car for a December or New Year cruise?
You can. We cover festive sailings from both Gatwick terminals, including the busy run of departures from Saturday 19 to Tuesday 22 December 2026 and the MSC Preziosa sailing on Christmas Day. Because rail is so limited over the holidays, these dates fill early, so booking once your flight is confirmed is the safest approach.
How do you handle a Gatwick arrival that slips because of winter weather?
The driver watches your flight number rather than the original timetable, so a late landing caused by fog, ice or a storm elsewhere moves the collection automatically. If the delay starts to threaten your check-in time we will talk you through the options before you land, rather than leaving it until you reach the arrivals hall.
Is a car better than the train from Gatwick over Christmas?
Over the festive period it usually is. Engineering works and replacement buses are common between Christmas and New Year, and there is little or no rail service on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. A car avoids the change of train entirely and keeps your luggage with you from the arrivals hall to the terminal door.
