Kensington and Chelsea to Southampton cruise terminal

Kensington and Chelsea are on the right side of London for Southampton: the A4 and the M3 are close, so the drive to the port is one of the quickest from central London. A private car collects you from your home or hotel, about 78–79 miles from the cruise terminals, from £171 per car with your luggage.
Your route from Kensington and Chelsea to Southampton
A transfer from the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea to the Southampton cruise terminals needs careful timing to avoid West London's congestion. Drivers usually head out on the A4 past Earl's Court towards the M4, then join the M25 and the M3 south, or take the A316 directly to the M3 when that is quicker on the day.
Known West London bottlenecks
- The Chiswick corridor: Mid-morning traffic often bunches here. For a 13:00 check-in, your chauffeur will normally plan to leave Kensington by about 10:15 to absorb delays.
- M25 to M3 (Junction 12 / M3 Junction 2): The move from the M25 onto the M3 southbound is a regular morning pinch point. Drivers watch live traffic and can switch to the A30 if the motorway is blocked.
Residential and hotel pickups
Whether you are collected from a private residence in Belgravia, an apartment in Chelsea or a hotel such as The Milestone or The Cadogan, your chauffeur arrives about 15 minutes before your departure time, lets you know they are outside and loads your luggage. Longer cruises often mean several hard-shell cases and garment bags, so we match this route with a car that has room for everything.

Where we collect from in the Royal Borough
We pick up anywhere in Kensington and Chelsea, from the mansion blocks of Earl's Court to the garden squares of Notting Hill. A few areas that cruise passengers often travel from:
- Kensington High Street and Holland Park: family homes and hotels near Kensington Gardens, with a straight run out along the A4 and the M4 or the A316.
- South Kensington: hotels and serviced apartments around the museums, the Royal Albert Hall and Gloucester Road, popular with visitors from overseas before a cruise.
- Knightsbridge: hotels and apartments near Harrods and Hyde Park. Addresses on the SW1 side carry the central London surcharge.
- Chelsea: King's Road, Cheyne Walk and the streets towards Fulham, with easy access to the Embankment and the A3220.
- Notting Hill and North Kensington: the Westway puts you on the A40, and the driver picks the faster way to the M3 on the day.
Pick-up times for embarkation day
From Kensington the car heads west on the A4 through Hammersmith and out to the M3, then south to Southampton, about 78–79 miles. It is a little under 1 hour 45 minutes with clear roads. On a weekday morning, give it 2 hours 15 minutes.
| Your check-in slot | Weekday pick-up | Saturday or Sunday pick-up |
|---|---|---|
| 11:00–12:00 | 08:45 | 09:00 |
| 12:00–13:00 | 09:30 | 09:45 |
| 13:00–14:00 | 10:30 | 10:45 |
| 14:00–15:00 | 11:30 | 11:45 |
Arriving early in your slot means a shorter queue at check-in. If you are joining a ship from a Chelsea or Kensington hotel after flying in, see also London hotel to cruise terminal transfers.
Coming home after the cruise
The driver tracks your ship on disembarkation morning and waits at the terminal while you leave the ship, with no waiting charge. Most passengers are in the car by 08:00 to 10:15 and back in Kensington or Chelsea by late morning or early afternoon.
What it costs per person
An MPV from Kensington for four people works out at about £46 each, with all the cases in the back and no changes. The alternative is a taxi to Waterloo, the train to Southampton Central and another taxi to the dock, which is cheaper for two people travelling light but a lot more lifting for anyone with cruise luggage.
Kensington and Chelsea to Southampton for December and winter sailings
Heading west along the A4 to pick up the M3 makes this one of the shorter London runs to the ship, at around 78–79 miles. In December the slow part is usually the first couple of miles: Christmas shoppers around Knightsbridge, the King's Road and Kensington High Street fill the streets from late morning, so for a midday boarding slot we suggest leaving earlier than you would in summer. Once past Chiswick the traffic tends to ease, fog permitting.
Many guests staying in South Kensington and Chelsea hotels over the holidays are joining a festive itinerary, and most of those cruises leave between Saturday 19 and Tuesday 22 December. Drivers come to the hotel entrance or your mews door, load the cases and any wrapped presents into the boot, and keep the cabin warm for the drive down. If you are sailing on MSC Preziosa on Christmas Day, when there is little or no rail service, booking the car well ahead is the sensible move.
In the other direction, January and February arrivals bring their own problems. Ships are usually alongside by about 06:00, yet Atlantic storms can delay a vessel or change its berthing time at short notice. The driver watches the ship's actual position, so the car turns up for when you really come ashore rather than for a time printed on a ticket weeks earlier, and you are back in SW3 or W8 without hanging around on the quay.
- Collection from hotel entrances and mews houses, with cases loaded quickly out of the rain
- Climate control set before pickup, so coats can come off once you sit down
- Earlier departures suggested in December to clear Knightsbridge shopping traffic
- Saloon for up to four with two large cases; MPV for up to six with four
For a winter evening closer to home, our theatre and fine dining chauffeur collects from Chelsea and Kensington addresses all year.
Questions
How much is a transfer from Kensington to Southampton cruise terminal?
From £171 for a saloon (up to 4 people, 2 large cases) and £186 for an MPV (up to 6 people, 4 cases), per vehicle, one way, from a Kensington W8 address.
Why is Sloane Square dearer than Kensington High Street?
Addresses in SW1, which includes Sloane Square, Belgravia and parts of Knightsbridge, fall inside the area where our central London surcharge applies. Fares from Sloane Square start at £192 for a saloon. Most of Chelsea (SW3 and SW10) and Kensington (W8, SW5, SW7) are outside it.
How long does it take from Kensington to Southampton cruise port?
About 78–79 miles, usually 1 hour 45 minutes with clear roads and up to 2 hours 20 minutes on a weekday morning.
Can you pick up from South Kensington hotels and serviced apartments?
Yes. We collect from any hotel, serviced apartment or private address in the borough. Give us the building name and any access instructions.
Do you bring us back from the ship to Kensington?
Yes. The driver tracks your ship, waits at the terminal while you disembark and takes you home. A return booked with the outward trip costs 1.9 times the single fare.
Can we be collected from a Kensington hotel for a Christmas or New Year cruise?
Yes. Festive departures are concentrated between 19 and 22 December, with MSC Preziosa sailing on Christmas Day, and we book drivers for all of those dates. Give us the hotel name and your terminal and we will agree the time and fixed fare in advance. Family members staying at neighbouring hotels can share an MPV if the pickups are close together.
What happens on the way home if winter weather slows the ship?
Nothing changes for you. The driver monitors the vessel's position and the terminal's berthing updates, so if wind or fog holds the ship back from its usual 06:00 arrival, the collection time follows. You come through baggage reclaim, call the driver, and head back up the M3 towards Kensington without renegotiating anything.
