Parking is the most argued-about topic on the UK cruise forums: which company for which ship, what a fortnight really costs, whether the valet is worth it, and which "meet and greet" firms to avoid. Here is a plain guide, with the honest sums for when being driven beats driving.
- Two official operators: CPS and ABParking
- Which one depends on your cruise line
- Advance booking only, no pay-on-arrival
- Five terminals across a mile of docks

Who runs parking at Southampton, and for which cruise lines
There is no single "port car park". Two operators hold the official contracts inside the dock gates, and your cruise line decides which one you can use.
| Operator | Cruise lines | Terminals | How it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPS (Cruise & Passenger Services) | P&O Cruises, Cunard and Princess only | Ocean, Mayflower and QEII, wherever the ship is berthed | Valet. You drive to the terminal, porters take the cases from the boot, you hand the keys to an attendant and the car is moved to a secure compound. It is brought back to the terminal for you on return. |
| ABParking (Associated British Ports) | Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, MSC, NCL, Fred. Olsen, Disney, Saga and most others | City, Horizon and Mayflower | Self-park. You drop luggage at the terminal, then park in a long-stay car park beside it, generally a one to five minute walk. Booked online in advance only. |
Both are Park Mark accredited and both are inside the security fence, which is why the forums recommend them over the field-with-a-shuttle alternatives despite the price. Neither takes turn-up-and-pay customers for cruise-length stays; if you arrive without a booking you will be pointed to the short-stay car park at short-stay rates.
What Southampton cruise parking actually costs
Neither operator publishes a flat tariff; you get a quote for your dates and ship. That said, the same figures come up over and over in recent forum threads, and they are a fair guide for budgeting.
| Option | 7 nights | 14 nights | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPS valet (P&O, Cunard, Princess) | £140–£160 | £160–£220 | The car cleaning add-on is extra. Cancellable with notice. |
| ABParking long stay | £120–£150 | £190–£200 | £196 for a fortnight is the figure most often quoted. Discount codes of 10–15% circulate on the cruise-line Facebook groups. |
| Off-site park and ride (Airlynx, Triangle, SCPS and similar) | £65–£95 | £100–£150 | Shuttle of 3 to 20 minutes with your cases, both ways. Book the earliest shuttle on embarkation day. |
| City centre multi-storey (unofficial) | From about £50 | £70–£100 | No security guarantee, and a taxi or a long walk with cases to the terminal. |
Ranges compiled from Cruise Critic, TripAdvisor and MoneySavingExpert threads in 2025–2026. Peak school-holiday sailings price higher; always get a dated quote.
Off-site parking: the cheaper option and its catches

The off-site operators around Southampton are a real saving for a fortnight, and the established ones such as Airlynx at Britannia Wharf, a few minutes from the Western Docks, get consistently good reports. The catches are practical rather than financial. You are handling your own luggage on and off a minibus twice, the shuttle runs to its timetable rather than to your boarding slot, and on a turnaround morning when three or four ships are in you may be queueing for the second or third bus. Return day is the reverse: your car is not waiting at the kerb, so add 30 to 45 minutes before you are actually driving.
Four pitfalls the forums keep warning about
- Unofficial "meet and greet" firms. Several names come up with complaints on TripAdvisor about cars left in fields or damaged. If a company is not CPS, ABParking or a well-reviewed park and ride with a real address, look elsewhere.
- Arriving before the previous cruise's coaches have gone. CPS cannot always take you on the valet lane early. One P&O passenger described being sent into the short-stay car park, the pay machines failing, and a £100 parking charge notice following them home.
- Booking the wrong terminal. Parking is tied to a terminal, and terminals can change close to sailing. Check the boarding pass the week before and ring the operator if it has moved.
- Assuming you can pay on the day. Both official operators are pre-book only for cruise stays. Turn up unbooked and the fallback is short-stay rates by the hour.
Drive and park, or be driven? The honest sums
This is the question underneath most parking threads, and the answer depends on how many of you there are and where you start. Below is a like-for-like comparison for a party leaving from north-east London or west Essex, about 110 road miles from the port, on a seven-night cruise. Fuel is worked at 40p a mile for a family car, and the transfer figures are Woodford Chauffeur Cars's fixed fares with the return booked at the same time, which the booking engine discounts against two singles.
| Party | Drive and park (7 nights) | Private transfer, both ways | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Couple, two large cases | £150 official parking + £90 fuel = about £240, plus five to six hours of driving | Saloon from about £415 | Driving is cheaper. A transfer buys you the morning off and no car sitting at the port. |
| Family of four, four cases | About £240 as above, but a full boot and a car that struggles with four cruise cases | MPV from about £515, seats six with four cases | About £275 more to be driven. Worth it if the family car cannot take four cruise cases, or if anyone is flying in or out. |
| Two couples or a group of six to eight | Two cars: about £480, or one car and a hire van | 8-seater from about £665, or £83 each for eight | Around £185 more than two parked cars, for one vehicle, one bill and nobody driving. Cheaper than a car plus a hired van. |
| Anyone flying into Heathrow or Gatwick first | Not an option without a hire car | Heathrow to the port from £146 one way | A transfer is the only sensible choice; forum consensus for overseas cruisers. |
The pattern is simple. For two people with a car outside the house, parking wins on price and a transfer wins on comfort. The gap narrows per head as the party grows, to about £83 each for eight, and it disappears as soon as an airport is involved at either end. What the fare buys in every case is the removal of the two worst parts of embarkation day: the M25 and the luggage. Our London to Southampton page has the full fare table by terminal and vehicle.
Parking at each Southampton cruise terminal
Search for Horizon or Mayflower cruise terminal parking and you meet the same two operators again. The terminal sets the dock gate and how far you walk with the cases; your cruise line sets whether it is CPS valet or ABParking self-park. Sat-nav postcodes and berth numbers are on our terminal guide.
| Terminal | Docks and gate | Official parking | From car to check-in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ocean Cruise Terminal | Eastern Docks, Dock Gate 4 off Canute Road (SO14 3QN) | CPS valet for P&O, Cunard and Princess sailings | Keys handed over at the terminal door; no walk |
| QEII Cruise Terminal | Eastern Docks, Dock Gate 4, at the far end of the estate (SO14 3GG) | CPS valet for P&O, Cunard and Princess sailings | Keys handed over at the terminal door; allow extra minutes inside the docks |
| City Cruise Terminal | Western Docks, off West Quay Road by Herbert Walker Avenue (SO15) | ABParking long stay, pre-booked online | Drop cases at the door, then park beside the terminal; one to five minutes on foot |
| Horizon Cruise Terminal | Western Docks, Dock Gate 10 off West Bay Road (SO15) | ABParking long stay, pre-booked online | Long-stay car park next to the terminal; short walk back after dropping luggage |
| Mayflower Cruise Terminal | Western Docks, Dock Gate 10, towards the western end (SO15) | CPS valet for P&O, Cunard and Princess; ABParking long stay for other lines | Valet at the door, or a short walk from the long-stay car park |
Terminals can change up to the week of sailing, and the parking booking follows the ship, not the terminal you first booked. Check the boarding pass before you set off. Off-site park and ride shuttles drop at whichever terminal your ship is using that day.
If you do drive: dropping luggage at the terminal

Every terminal has a free drop-off zone at the doors where porters take labelled cases straight from the boot. The driver then follows the signs, which show the ship's name rather than the terminal, to the parking compound. Ocean and QEII are in the Eastern Docks through Dock Gate 4 off Canute Road; City, Horizon and Mayflower are in the Western Docks through Dock Gates 8, 10 and 20 off West Quay Road. Our terminal guide has postcodes and berth numbers for each.
Parking at the terminal itself
CPS (Cruise Parking Southampton) is the official valet service tied to the terminals, available only if you are sailing with P&O Cruises, Cunard or Princess. You drive to the terminal, hand over the keys at the kerb and the car is waiting when you return. Expect roughly £135 to £155 for a seven-night cruise at current rates, more in peak season. AB Parking does the self-park equivalent at the City and Horizon terminals for Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, MSC, NCL, Fred. Olsen, Disney and Saga passengers, about a one-minute walk from check-in, typically £135 to £160 for a week. The Triangle car park serves Ocean Terminal with a four-minute walk to the ship.
Park and ride and city-centre alternatives
Independent park-and-ride operators such as Parking4Cruises, Airlynx (Britannia Wharf, a three-minute transfer, and Wren’s Farm, up to twenty minutes) and Southampton Park & Cruise charge around £60 to £100 for seven nights. City-centre multi-storeys work out at £40 to £105 for a full week; West Quay is around £15 a day, and you then need a taxi to the terminal with your cases. Book early: the cheapest spaces go first and prices climb through the summer.
The sum that actually matters
Add it up honestly. Terminal parking for a week is £135 to £160, plus fuel for the round trip, plus the risk of an M3 or M27 hold-up on embarkation morning with a ship that will not wait. A fixed-price transfer from central London is £176 per car, from Heathrow £146, from Gatwick £193, luggage included, door to terminal, with the return booked to your ship’s arrival time. For two people driving from London the parking option usually wins by a small margin; for a couple starting near Heathrow, or anyone flying in, the transfer is cheaper before you count the driving. For four sharing a car it is not close.
Drop-off if someone drives you
Every Southampton terminal has a set-down area by the check-in doors where a friend or a transfer driver can stop long enough to unload cases; you do not pay a drop-off charge as you do at the airports. Porters take luggage at the kerb and it reappears in your cabin.
Skip the car park: a fixed fare to the terminal door
Woodford Chauffeur Cars saloons, MPVs and 8-seaters from Essex, London, Heathrow and Gatwick to any Southampton cruise terminal. Luggage included, dropped at your dock gate, collected when you dock. Returns are discounted when booked together.
Southampton cruise parking by cruise line
Which car park you use depends on your cruise line, not on the terminal alone.
| Cruise line | Usual terminal | Official parking |
|---|---|---|
| P&O Cruises | Ocean, QEII | CPS valet |
| Cunard | Ocean, QEII | CPS valet |
| Princess | Ocean, City | CPS valet |
| MSC Cruises | Horizon, Mayflower | ABParking self-park |
| Royal Caribbean | City | ABParking self-park |
| Celebrity | Mayflower | ABParking self-park |
| NCL | City, Horizon, Mayflower | ABParking self-park |
Where do I park for an MSC cruise from Southampton?
MSC usually sails from the Horizon Cruise Terminal (Dock Gate 10) and sometimes from Mayflower (Dock Gate 20). Official parking is ABParking self-park beside the terminal, booked online in advance. Off-site park and ride is cheaper but adds a shuttle.
What is CPS parking at Southampton?
CPS (Cruise & Passenger Services) is the valet parking service for P&O Cruises, Cunard and Princess. You drive to the terminal, porters unload the cases, and an attendant parks the car in a secure compound and brings it back when you return.
Parking or a transfer for a winter cruise?
The parking sums in this guide barely move in winter, but the experience does. Walking from a car park to a terminal, or standing at a shuttle stop in sleet with cases and coats, is a different matter in December. On the way home, ships are usually alongside by about 06:00, so you could be scraping frost off a windscreen in the dark before a long drive after a fortnight at sea.
Festive dates also squeeze space. With most Christmas cruises leaving between Saturday 19 and Tuesday 22 December 2026, several ships can turn around close together and car parks, on site and off, fill accordingly. A private car takes you to the terminal door and meets you there on return, so there is no shuttle to wait for and no car to defrost before you can set off.
- No frosty car park and no outdoor shuttle queue on a dark morning
- Fixed per-vehicle fare with luggage included, worth comparing to festive parking
- Ship tracked on your return, so a weather delay does not leave you waiting outside
- Heated car straight from the terminal door
Once the cruise is over, the same fixed-fare approach applies to our airport transfers and executive routes for winter trips.
Questions cruisers ask about Southampton parking
Can I use CPS if I am sailing with Royal Caribbean or MSC?
No. CPS is the contracted operator for P&O, Cunard and Princess. Royal Caribbean, MSC, NCL, Celebrity, Fred. Olsen, Disney and Saga passengers use ABParking beside City, Horizon and Mayflower, or an off-site park and ride.
How much is parking at Southampton cruise port for 14 nights?
Recent forum reports put official port parking at roughly £160 to £220 for a fortnight depending on operator and season, and off-site park and ride at £100 to £150. Get a dated quote; peak summer sailings cost more.
Is Southampton cruise parking secure?
CPS and ABParking are inside the port's security fence and hold the Park Mark award. Off-site operators vary; the established ones are well reviewed, but check the address and recent reviews before booking any "meet and greet" service.
Can I pay for cruise parking on arrival?
Not for a cruise-length stay with either official operator. Book online before you travel. The short-stay car parks at each terminal are for drop-offs and pick-ups and charge by the hour.
Is a private transfer cheaper than parking?
For a couple, no; parking plus fuel is usually £150 to £200 less over a week. For groups of six to eight in one vehicle the difference shrinks to roughly £20 a head, and for anyone connecting with a flight a fixed-fare car is the practical option. What you are paying for is no drive and no car park on embarkation morning.
Where do I park for Horizon Cruise Terminal?
Horizon is in the Western Docks through Dock Gate 10 off West Bay Road. Cruise lines sailing from Horizon use ABParking: drop your cases at the terminal, then park in the long-stay car park beside it, a short walk away. Book online in advance; there is no pay-on-arrival option for cruise-length stays.
Where do I park for Mayflower Cruise Terminal?
It depends on the cruise line. P&O, Cunard and Princess passengers use CPS valet parking at the terminal door; other lines use the ABParking long-stay car park beside the terminal. Mayflower is towards the western end of the docks, so allow a few extra minutes inside the dock estate.
Is there Southampton cruise parking with a shuttle?
Yes. Off-site park and ride operators such as Airlynx, Triangle and SCPS charge roughly £65 to £95 for seven nights and £100 to £150 for fourteen, with a minibus to your terminal taking three to twenty minutes. You handle your own cases on and off the shuttle, so book the earliest bus on embarkation morning and allow 30 to 45 minutes extra on the way home.
How does CPS cruise parking at Southampton work?
CPS is valet parking for P&O, Cunard and Princess passengers. Drive to the terminal, porters take your cases at the door, you hand the keys to a CPS attendant and the car is driven to a secure Park Mark compound. It is brought back to the terminal for your return. Book in advance through your cruise line or CPS; recent forum reports put it at roughly £140 to £160 for seven nights and £160 to £220 for fourteen.
Is parking harder to find for Christmas cruises from Southampton?
It can be. Festive sailings are packed into a few days, mainly 19 to 22 December 2026, so several ships may turn around close together and car parks fill sooner. Booking early helps, but a transfer removes the question altogether, along with the shuttle and the frozen windscreen when you get back.
How does the driver know when to collect us if a winter storm delays the ship?
We track the ship rather than relying on the scheduled arrival. If heavy weather holds it back or changes its berth time, your driver adjusts and is there when you come out. That compares well with collecting your own car from a cold car park after a late, tiring disembarkation.
