What ladies wear on celebration night
Celebration nights are the showpiece evenings of any Southampton sailing. P&O Cruises calls them Black Tie or Celebration Nights, Cunard calls them Gala Evenings, and most lines hold one or two a week. It is the night for the photographer, the captain's welcome and the best menu of the voyage, so most guests dress up.
- Full-length evening gown – the classic choice, especially on Cunard and P&O.
- Elegant cocktail dress – knee-length or midi styles are perfectly acceptable.
- Dressy evening separates – wide-leg palazzo trousers with a silk or sequinned top look chic and pack flat.
- Finishing touches – statement jewellery, a clutch bag and a pashmina or wrap for air-conditioned dining rooms and breezy decks.
- Shoes – block heels or embellished flats are far kinder on a moving ship than stilettos.
Pack crease-resistant fabrics such as jersey, chiffon and crepe, and hang them in the bathroom while you shower on the first night. Prefer to keep it relaxed? Most ships keep at least one venue with a casual dress code on formal evenings; your daily programme will say which.
Are rechargeable batteries and power banks allowed on a cruise?
Generally, yes. Phones, cameras, e-readers and personal power banks are welcome on board, but there are rules worth knowing before you pack:
- Keep them in your hand luggage. Lithium batteries in checked suitcases can be flagged at terminal screening and delay your bags reaching your cabin.
- Some lines now restrict using or charging power banks on board, even where you may bring them. Rules change, so check your cruise line's current prohibited items list the week before you sail.
- No extension leads or multi-plug power strips. Most ships confiscate them. A single cruise-approved USB charger without surge protection is the safe choice.
- Flying home afterwards? Airlines have tightened power bank rules too. Keep them in your carry-on and check the watt-hour limit.
When to book your transfer to the cruise terminal
Your cruise line allocates each cabin a check-in time, usually between late morning and mid-afternoon, and sends it with your e-tickets roughly two to three weeks before sailing. Plan the car around that time, not the sailing time.
- Arrive at your allocated time, and no more than 15 to 30 minutes before it. Arriving hours early simply means queuing outside the terminal.
- No time yet? Plan for about 90 minutes before the published departure and we will re-time the pick-up when your e-ticket arrives.
- Allow for traffic. Fridays and Saturdays bring the most ship turnarounds and the heaviest M3 and M27 traffic; add 30 minutes.
- Book early. Reserve your car as soon as the cruise is confirmed, particularly for peak summer and Christmas sailings.

When to book your pick-up from the ship
Ships normally berth in Southampton early in the morning, and guests leave in groups from roughly 7:30am to 10:30am according to the colour or number on their luggage tags.
- Book the car 45 to 90 minutes after your disembarkation group time, to allow for leaving the ship, collecting cases and walking out of the terminal.
- Self-disembarking with your own bags? You are usually among the first off, so a pick-up around 8:00 to 8:30am works well.
- Flying home the same day? Choose a Heathrow or Gatwick flight from early-to-mid afternoon at the earliest.
- Ship running late? We track your ship's arrival and your driver waits.

Car parks set aside for cruise passengers
If you are driving yourself, the in-port car parks operated for the cruise lines are reserved for cruise passengers only and must be booked in advance. Your cruise line will tell you which operator serves your terminal.
Southampton City Council also allows cruise passengers to leave cars in three public multi-storeys, paid on exit:
- Bedford Place – SO15 2TZ
- Eastgate Street – SO14 3HH, with a taxi rank nearby on the High Street
- Grosvenor Square – SO15 2BE
A seven-night stay in the council car parks costs roughly £39 to £41 at current council tariffs, but you will still need a taxi to the terminal with your luggage, and spaces go quickly on busy turnaround days. Our Southampton cruise parking guide compares every option, including when a private transfer works out cheaper.
Skip the parking, the shuttles and the heavy cases
A fixed-fare Woodford Chauffeur Cars car from Heathrow, Gatwick, London or Essex to any of the five Southampton terminals, and home again when you are back. Luggage included, ship and traffic tracked, dropped at your dock gate. From £146 per car.
Adding winter to your Southampton cruise checklist
If you are sailing from Southampton between October and March, the checklist grows. A warm coat for the terminal queue and the open deck, gloves for a frosty quayside on the way home, and a compact umbrella all earn their place, and celebration outfits for a festive itinerary often mean heavier fabrics. Keep the power bank in your hand luggage as usual, and charge it fully before leaving home, since cold weather drains phone batteries faster.
Transfer timing shifts too. Allow more time for the drive in December, when fog can settle over the M3 and mornings stay dark, and remember ships returning to Southampton are usually alongside by about 06:00. A saloon takes 2 large cases and an MPV takes 4, so if winter clothes push you up a case or two, mention it when you book.
- Coats and gloves kept with you, cases in the boot
- Pickup time padded for winter roads
- Return collection timed to the ship's actual arrival
- Vehicle size matched to winter luggage, with no extra charge for bags
For a dressed-up evening back on dry land, our West End theatre and fine dining chauffeur runs throughout the winter.
Quick answers
What should ladies wear on a cruise celebration night?
A full-length evening gown, an elegant cocktail dress or smart evening separates such as palazzo trousers with a silk or sequinned top. Add statement jewellery, a clutch bag and a wrap for cool dining rooms and breezy decks. Block heels are kinder than stilettos on a moving ship.
Can I take a power bank on a cruise from Southampton?
Usually yes, as long as it is a personal power bank packed in your hand luggage rather than your suitcase. Some cruise lines now restrict using or charging power banks on board, so check your line's latest prohibited items list before you pack. Extension leads and multi-plug power strips are banned on most ships.
What time should my transfer drop me at the Southampton cruise terminal?
Aim to arrive at your allocated check-in time and no more than 15 to 30 minutes before it. If you have no time yet, plan for about 90 minutes before sailing. Check-in usually closes 60 minutes before departure.
What time should I book my pick-up from the ship?
Ships normally dock early in the morning and passengers leave in groups from about 7:30am to 10:30am. Book your car for 45 to 90 minutes after your disembarkation group time, or around 8:00 to 8:30am if you are self-disembarking with your own luggage.
Is there a car park just for cruise passengers in Southampton?
Yes. The in-port car parks run for the cruise lines are set aside for cruise passengers only and must be booked in advance. Southampton City Council also lets cruise passengers use its Bedford Place, Eastgate Street and Grosvenor Square multi-storeys, but those are public car parks, so you still need a taxi to the terminal.
Do your transfer times change for winter and festive sailings?
The principle is the same: we work back from your check-in window. In winter we usually suggest leaving a little earlier for fog, frost and darkness, and on the busy festive dates between 19 and 22 December 2026 we allow for queues at the dock gates. You will see the suggested time when we confirm.
How do you know when to collect us if a winter storm delays the ship?
We follow the ship's actual progress into Southampton, not the printed arrival. If it berths late, your driver waits for you; if it arrives early, they are already there. That way you are not standing on a cold quayside wondering where the car is.
Cruise line rules and car park tariffs change. Always check with your cruise line and Southampton City Council before you travel.
