Nothing divides a cruise ship quite like the dress code. Some guests pack three gowns and a dinner jacket; others want to eat in the same shorts they wore on the beach. Here is how the rules actually work and where we think the line should be drawn.

  • Most lines still hold 1–2 formal nights a week
  • Casual venues stay open on formal nights
  • Shorts are usually banned in main dining rooms at dinner
  • Rules are set by the ship, not the guest

Should formal night stay or go?

We say stay. Formal nights are one of the few moments left where getting dressed up is the whole point: the photos, the captain's welcome, the special menu. Lines have already softened the rules, with P&O renaming them Celebration Nights and many lines accepting a smart suit instead of a dinner jacket. Anyone who would rather skip it can eat in the buffet or a casual venue, so nobody is forced to dress up.

Should guests in jeans be turned away on formal night?

From the main dining room and the formal venues, yes, politely. Guests who have made the effort have a right to the atmosphere they were promised, and the dress code is published before you book. That said, crew should always point people to an open casual venue rather than simply turning them away, and smart dark jeans with a jacket on a smart-casual night are a very different thing from ripped denim on a black-tie night.

Should shorts be allowed in the dining room?

At breakfast and lunch, most lines allow tidy shorts in the main dining room. At dinner, almost every line asks for long trousers for men, and we agree. Evenings are part of the experience, and a pair of chinos is hardly a hardship. On hot-weather Caribbean itineraries, some lines relax the rule in their casual venues, and that seems the right balance.

Packing tips for dress-code nights

  • Men: a dark suit or dinner jacket covers every formal night; add chinos and a collared shirt for smart-casual evenings.
  • Women: see our celebration night outfit guide.
  • Travelling light? Choose one formal outfit and vary it with accessories.

Formalwear and getting to the ship for a winter sailing

Formal nights on winter sailings tend to bring out heavier fabrics: velvet, wool suits, a wrap for the walk to the theatre. Lovely on board, awkward in a suitcase. If you are joining a festive itinerary or one of Queen Mary 2's regular transatlantic crossings, where dressing up is very much part of the point, expect your cases to be fuller than on a summer week in the Mediterranean.

That has a practical knock-on for the trip to Southampton. Garment bags and an extra case sit better in an MPV, which takes up to 6 people and 4 cases, than in a saloon with room for 2. A car also means the dinner jacket arrives uncreased, rather than squashed into a luggage rack on a crowded December train, and you are not carrying a hanging bag through a station in the rain.

  • Garment bags laid flat in the boot rather than folded on a train
  • Luggage included, however many outfits you bring
  • Flight tracked for winter delays if you are flying in

If you enjoy the dressing-up part, our West End theatre and fine dining chauffeur is an easy excuse to wear it again on a winter evening.

Quick answers

Do I have to dress up on cruise formal nights?

Only if you eat in the main dining room or formal venues. Casual venues such as the buffet stay open with a relaxed dress code.

Can I wear jeans to dinner on a cruise?

On casual and smart-casual nights, many lines accept smart jeans. On formal nights the main dining room usually does not.

Are shorts allowed in the cruise dining room at night?

Most lines ask men to wear long trousers in the main dining room at dinner. Shorts are usually fine at breakfast and lunch.

Can you fit garment bags and formalwear for a winter or festive cruise?

Yes. Tell us how many cases and garment bags you are bringing and we will suggest the right vehicle. A saloon takes two large cases and an MPV takes four, and the luggage is included in the fixed fare. For transatlantic crossings with several formal nights, the MPV is usually the comfortable choice.

What if winter weather delays our flight before a festive sailing?

The driver follows your flight and adjusts the pickup to the time you actually land, so fog or a storm does not mean a missed car. We do still recommend arriving with plenty of margin before check-in, or the day before, during the busy December sailing period.
