A cruise over New Year is one of the most festive weeks at sea, and it prompts the same questions on the cruise boards every year. Here are our answers, from the driver’s seat on the road to Southampton.

  • Christmas decorations usually stay up until New Year’s Day
  • Expect a countdown party, party favours and a midnight toast
  • Book New Year’s Eve specialty dining before you sail
  • Royal Caribbean status can be matched on Celebrity

What is New Year’s Eve actually like on a cruise ship?

Think of the biggest party night of the cruise, spread across the whole ship. Bars, lounges, the theatre and the pool deck all have something on, and most people drift between them before gathering for the countdown. On Celebrity, the main countdown has a live band, party favours and noisemakers, and guests there get a complimentary glass of sparkling wine at midnight. On Royal Caribbean’s bigger ships the Royal Promenade is the centre of the party and free to join, while some bars sell reserved New Year’s Eve seating, so check the programme before you pay extra for anything.

A few things regulars learn quickly. The best spots for the countdown fill up well before midnight, so pick yours and get there early. The ship’s clock is the one that counts, and it may not match your phone if you have changed time zones. New Year’s Day is usually slow and quiet, with a late breakfast for most. And if the ship is in port on the night, the local fireworks can be the highlight: Funchal in Madeira is the famous one, and 11 cruise ships gathered there to see in 2026.

Will the ship still be decorated for Christmas?

Almost certainly, if you are on board for New Year’s Eve. Ships dress for the season from late November or early December, with big trees, lights and often a gingerbread display, and the decorations usually stay up through New Year’s Eve. They tend to come down soon after 1 January, so on a sailing that runs into the first days of January you may see the crew packing them away before you get home. If you board after New Year, expect them to be gone.

Is there a special New Year’s Eve dinner, or should we book a specialty restaurant?

Both work, so it comes down to the kind of night you want. The main dining room usually marks New Year’s Eve with a special menu and a dressier, gala feel, so you will not miss out by eating there. Specialty restaurants may run festive menus of their own, and New Year’s Eve is one of the first nights to book up, so if a particular restaurant matters to you, reserve it before you sail through your cruise planner or the line’s app.

Our suggestion: book an earlier table on New Year’s Eve so dinner does not run into the countdown, and save the specialty restaurant for a quieter evening, such as New Year’s Day, when a slow meal is exactly what you will want. Travelling as a group? Book early whichever you choose, because big tables are the hardest to find on the busiest nights.

What do people wear on New Year’s Eve at sea?

Most people dress up, whatever the programme says. Celebrity replaced formal nights with Evening Chic, which means cocktail dresses, smart blazers or designer jeans, with formal wear welcome but not required. Royal Caribbean still has formal nights, when suits, tuxedos, cocktail dresses and gowns come out, while Norwegian has no formal nights, just an optional dress-up night. On New Year’s Eve a bit of sparkle and a jacket are never out of place, and a warm layer is worth having if you plan to see in the year on deck. Our guide to formal nights and dress codes has the rules by line.

First Celebrity cruise after NCL or Royal Caribbean: what is different?

If you have sailed a lot with Norwegian or Royal Caribbean, Celebrity will feel familiar but calmer. It belongs to the same group as Royal Caribbean, and the guests we drive tend to describe it as more grown-up: less about water slides and big attractions, more about food, design, the spa and good places to sit with a drink.

Dining is the biggest change on the newer Edge-class ships, such as Celebrity Edge, Apex, Beyond, Ascent and Xcel. Instead of one main dining room there are four complimentary restaurants, Cosmopolitan, Cyprus, Normandie and Tuscan, each with its own theme alongside a shared core menu. Evenings follow the Evening Chic dress code above rather than formal nights.

Your loyalty status may come with you. Royal Caribbean’s Crown & Anchor members can match their tier to Celebrity’s Captain’s Club (Diamond matches Elite, for example), while Norwegian’s Latitudes status is not part of that match, so NCL regulars start afresh. Finally, check what your fare includes: whether drinks and Wi-Fi are in your booking or sold separately, and how gratuities are charged.

Our sailing’s Facebook group is silent. How do we meet people?

You are not alone: roll calls and sailing groups are much quieter than they used to be, and plenty of members read without ever posting. The easiest fix is to go first. Introduce yourselves, mention it is your first time with the line, and suggest something specific, such as a drink at sail-away or a meeting point before the countdown. A concrete plan gets far more replies than an open question. It is worth checking the Cruise Critic roll call for your sailing too.

Once on board, the daily programme usually lists meet-ups, for solo travellers among others, and trivia, dance classes and shared tables at dinner do the rest. New Year’s Eve itself is the friendliest night of the cruise: nobody counts down to midnight alone. There is more on cruise friendships and why people keep coming back in our community guide.

Sailing from Southampton over Christmas and New Year

If you would rather start your festive cruise closer to home, Southampton has plenty of choice. For December 2026, P&O’s Iona, Arcadia and Ventura, Cunard’s Queen Anne and Fred. Olsen’s Balmoral all head for the Canary Islands over Christmas, and Ventura, Arcadia and Balmoral are due in Madeira for New Year’s Eve and its fireworks: see our full list of festive sailings and guide to New Year’s Eve in Madeira. Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 leaves on 12 December for a transatlantic crossing and a Caribbean voyage that sees in the New Year at sea. Heading south from Southampton in December usually means a winter crossing of the Bay of Biscay, so pack your seasickness remedies and a warm coat for sail-away.

Getting to the port takes a little more planning at this time of year. In recent years South Western Railway has run no trains on Christmas Day or Boxing Day, and the days between Christmas and New Year are a favourite time for engineering work, with buses replacing some trains on the Waterloo to Southampton line. Check National Rail for your date before relying on the train, and see our guide to getting to Southampton over Christmas. If you are flying in, winter weather can delay flights, so many cruisers arrive the day before and stay the night near the port or Heathrow.

Our tip: if you are sailing between Christmas and New Year, book your transfer when you book the cruise, so the car is sorted before the festive rush. We track your flight, and your fixed fare is confirmed before you pay. Sailing with Celebrity from Southampton? Getting home after a New Year's Eve cruise

New Year's Day 2027 falls on Friday 1 January, so whichever day your New Year sailing returns, much of the country is likely to be still on holiday. With the ship normally berthed by about 06:00, the morning after your final gala dinner starts early and in darkness. Holiday-week rail timetables are thinner than normal and engineering works are common, leaving many returning passengers waiting on cold platforms with more luggage than they left with.

A car booked in advance takes that problem away. Your driver tracks the ship, so if rough seas on the way home have pushed the berth time back, the collection moves too. Dinner jackets, sequinned dresses and duty-free purchases all go in the boot without extra charge, and you are driven door to door in a heated car while the rest of the ship queues for the station taxi rank.

  • Climate control on before you climb in on an icy January morning
  • Gowns, suit carriers and souvenirs are all covered by the fixed fare
  • Pickup timed to the ship's real arrival rather than the brochure time

Quick answers

Are Christmas decorations still up on a New Year cruise?

Usually, yes. Ships keep the trees and festive displays up through New Year’s Eve and generally take them down soon after 1 January.

Do you get free champagne at midnight on a cruise?

On Celebrity, guests at the main countdown get a complimentary glass of sparkling wine at midnight. Other lines vary, and some sell reserved New Year’s Eve packages, so check your line’s programme.

Should we book a specialty restaurant for New Year’s Eve?

If a particular restaurant matters to you, yes, and before you sail, because New Year’s Eve tables go first. The main dining room usually has a special menu that night, so it is a good alternative.

Do trains run to Southampton between Christmas and New Year?

On most days, but in recent years there have been no trains on Christmas Day or Boxing Day, and engineering work often brings replacement buses. Check National Rail for your date, or book a fixed-fare car.

Can you collect us from Southampton after a New Year's Eve cruise in early January?

Yes. Early January homecomings are a regular job for us, and the holiday week is when a pre-booked car matters most. Give us your ship and return date and we will arrange a collection timed around its expected arrival, with the fare fixed per vehicle and your luggage included. You can pay by card beforehand or to the driver.

How do you know when our ship is actually back if winter weather slows it down?

We follow the ship's progress on the morning of your return rather than relying on the published time. If a storm on the homeward leg has delayed it, the driver leaves later to match. That way the car is waiting when you clear the terminal, and nobody is standing about in the January cold wondering where their transfer has got to.

Can you take us from the ship straight to a London hotel to extend the New Year break?

Certainly. Many passengers like a night or two in town before going home, and we can drive you from the terminal to your hotel entrance in one booking. Let us know the hotel when you book so the driver can plan the drop-off, and remember that London check-in times are often mid-afternoon if you arrive early.
