Seeing in the New Year in Funchal bay is on a lot of cruisers’ wish lists. Around a dozen ships gather off Madeira’s capital as the hills around the bay light up at midnight. Here is how the night works, and which ships from Southampton will be there to see in 2027.

  • About eight minutes of fireworks from 59 launch points
  • 11 cruise ships were in Funchal for 2025/26
  • Ventura, Arcadia and Balmoral go from Southampton in 2026
  • Average December high of about 21°C

Why Funchal’s New Year fireworks are famous

Funchal is built around a natural amphitheatre of hills, and on New Year’s Eve fireworks go up all the way around it: from the hillsides, from the seafront and from platforms out in the bay. Guinness World Records recognised the 2006 display as the world’s largest fireworks display, a title Funchal held until 2012. Today the show lasts about eight minutes. For 2026/27, Madeira’s regional government, which organises and pays for it, has approved 59 launch points: 27 on the hillsides, 25 along the seafront, five on platforms at sea and two on neighbouring Porto Santo.

How many cruise ships are there?

Enough to make the bay part of the show. There were seven cruise ships in Funchal for New Year 2022/23, eight for 2023/24 and 11 for 2024/25. For 2025/26 there were 11 cruise ships plus a traditional sailing ship, with about 22,000 passengers on board, and the record is 13 ships for 2019/20. Most are British and German: in recent years P&O, Cunard, Fred. Olsen, Saga, Ambassador and Marella have all taken part, alongside TUI’s Mein Schiff ships, AIDA and Phoenix Reisen.

What happens on the night

Ships are split between the berths and an anchorage in the bay. Some spend the day alongside and move out to anchor in the late afternoon, while others arrive in the evening and go straight to their spot. At midnight the ships sound their horns together, for 2025/26 alongside the midnight bells of Funchal’s cathedral, and the fireworks start all around you.

Watch from the open decks, and head up high: a ship at anchor swings with the wind, so the side facing the city can change during the evening. Take a warm layer, because it gets cool on deck at midnight, even in Madeira. The weather can interfere, too. For 2025/26 a storm brought warnings of heavy rain; the fireworks went ahead, but low cloud and smoke spoiled the view, one ship cancelled its visit and the tender boats ran only when the weather allowed.

Going ashore on 31 December and 1 January

Funchal’s Christmas season runs from 1 December to early January, with the streets lit up every evening and a Christmas market on Avenida Arriaga. On New Year’s Eve the lights stay on into the early hours, there are road closures around the seafront, and the most popular viewing spots on land, such as Praça do Povo, CR7 square, the pier and Santa Catarina Park, fill up early. The Mercado dos Lavradores is open until 7pm on Thursday 31 December but closed on New Year’s Day, a public holiday, while the cable car up to Monte runs every day except Christmas Day.

How much time you get ashore depends on your ship. If it arrives in the evening, as Arcadia does in 2026, New Year’s Day is your chance to explore, so plan around the holiday closures. If your ship is at anchor, going ashore means a tender ride, which depends on the sea.

Which Southampton cruises are in Funchal for New Year 2027?

Three December 2026 sailings from Southampton are timed for the fireworks:

ShipLeaves SouthamptonNightsIn Funchal
P&O VenturaMon 21 Dec, 4pm14Arrives 8am on 31 December, leaves 2am on 1 January
P&O ArcadiaMon 21 Dec, 4pm16Arrives 10pm on 31 December, leaves 6pm on 1 January
Fred. Olsen BalmoralTue 22 Dec15Arrives the afternoon of 30 December, with a prime spot promised for the fireworks on the 31st

Arcadia is normally for adults only, but P&O has opened this sailing to all ages. From other starting points, Saga’s Spirit of Discovery leaves Portsmouth on 20 December and spends New Year’s Eve in Funchal, and Marella Explorer does so on a fly-cruise from Tenerife. P&O’s Iona and Cunard’s Queen Anne call at Madeira earlier, on 23 and 24 December, when the Christmas lights are up but before the fireworks. Times come from the lines and agents in September 2026 and can change. Our full list of festive sailings from Southampton has the rest.

What’s the weather like at New Year?

Mild, but not guaranteed. In Funchal the average December high is about 21°C and the average low about 16°C, with January a degree cooler, and the sea is around 19 to 20°C. December is also the wettest time of year, with rain on about 12 days in an average month, so pack a light waterproof along with the party clothes. The night of 31 December 2024 was mild and starry; a year later there were storm warnings.

Getting to your ship

Ventura and Arcadia both leave Southampton at 4pm on Monday 21 December, in the middle of the Christmas getaway, and Balmoral follows the next day. They come home between 4 and 6 January, just as everyone else goes back to work. Our guide to getting to Southampton over Christmas covers trains and roads, and our New Year’s Eve guide covers the party on board.

Getting to and from Southampton for a Madeira New Year cruise

New Year in Funchal means sailing south from Southampton at the end of December and coming back into a British January, two very different climates bookending the same holiday. Most passengers pack summer clothes for the island and heavy coats for the quayside, which is why Madeira cruisers tend to travel with more cases than they expect. An MPV seats six and fits four large cases, and all of that luggage is included in the fixed fare.

The homeward leg is where the weather has its say. The Bay of Biscay in January can slow a ship, and fog over the Solent or the M27 is common on winter mornings. Your ship should be alongside by about 06:00 on the final morning, but the driver follows the ship's actual progress, so a late berth means a later pickup rather than a cold wait outside the terminal or a missed onward connection.

  • A pre-heated car for the jump from Madeira sunshine to a January quayside
  • Room for a summer wardrobe and a winter one in a single booking
  • Ship tracking on your return, with no need to phone round for a taxi

Fancy a slow start to the year once you are back? Our Chewton Glen chauffeur service links the docks with a New Forest hotel for a quiet winter night or two.

Quick answers

How long are the Funchal New Year fireworks?

About eight minutes. For 2026/27 they are fired from 59 points around the bay, including the hillsides, the seafront and platforms at sea.

Can you see the Funchal fireworks from a cruise ship?

Yes. Ships gather at the berths and at anchor in the bay, so the display goes up all around you. Watch from the open decks and take a warm layer.

Which Southampton cruises are in Madeira for New Year’s Eve 2026?

P&O’s Ventura and Arcadia, which leave Southampton on 21 December, and Fred. Olsen’s Balmoral, which leaves on 22 December.

Is Madeira warm at New Year?

Mild rather than hot: average highs are about 21°C in December, but it is also the wettest time of year, so bring a light waterproof.

Can you book us to the ship for a Madeira New Year sailing and back again in January?

Yes. We can arrange both journeys in one booking, with the return leg priced at 1.8 times the single fare. Send us your departure date, terminal and return date, and we will confirm the vehicle based on your passengers and cases. Many Madeira guests choose an MPV simply for the extra luggage space.

If our ship is late back from Madeira because of rough seas, what happens to our car?

You need do nothing. The driver checks the ship's position before setting off and times the collection to its revised arrival, so a slow passage across Biscay does not mean a missed pickup. You come through the terminal at your own pace, and the car will be warm and waiting.

Cruise line rules change. Always check the latest policies with your cruise line before you travel. This guide is general information, not legal or medical advice.
