Festive sailings leave Southampton on some of the hardest days of the year to travel in Britain. Here is what ran last Christmas, what is already known for 2026, and how to plan a journey to the ship that doesn’t depend on luck.

  • Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday
  • The Boxing Day bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December
  • No SWR trains ran on 25 or 26 December in 2024 or 2025
  • Most motorway roadworks are lifted over Christmas

The 2026 festive calendar

Christmas Day falls on Friday 25 December 2026. Boxing Day is a Saturday, so the bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December, and New Year’s Day is Friday 1 January 2027. Most festive cruises leave Southampton between Saturday 19 and Tuesday 22 December, MSC Preziosa sails on Christmas Eve, and two short New Year sailings leave on 28 and 29 December. The ships come home between 28 December and 6 January, when much of the country is heading back to work. Our list of Christmas and New Year sailings from Southampton has every date.

Trains: what happened last Christmas

South Western Railway runs the trains from London Waterloo to Southampton Central. In 2025 the last trains left Waterloo before 10pm on Christmas Eve (the last one through Southampton, to Weymouth, left at 7:35pm), and there were no SWR trains at all on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. On 27 and 28 December the line between Waterloo and Clapham Junction was closed for engineering work, so main-line trains started and finished at Clapham Junction, and a reduced service ran until 3 January. The normal timetable returned on 5 January.

The year before was similar: no trains on 25 or 26 December 2024, and engineering work near Woking that sent Southampton trains the long way round via Guildford, adding about 45 minutes, with rail replacement buses on some days. The extra early-morning trains SWR runs after the New Year’s Eve celebrations in London didn’t go as far as Southampton in either year.

What we know about Christmas 2026 so far

SWR publishes engineering work about 12 weeks ahead, and its December 2026 page currently stops at 13 December, with the rest of the month to follow. Before Christmas there are already weekend closures around Southampton Central on Sunday 22 November, around Eastleigh on 28 and 29 November, which matters if you sail on the 29 November Christmas market cruise, and between Southampton and Brockenhurst on Sunday 6 December. Further afield, Birmingham New Street will have no trains from 24 to 28 December, which affects CrossCountry journeys from the Midlands and the North, and a closure at Dolphin Junction near Slough from 27 December to 3 January will affect trains from London Paddington.

Until the timetable is out, plan on no trains on 25 and 26 December and a reduced service in the days around them, and check National Rail before relying on the train.

Coaches: National Express runs on Christmas Day

When the trains stop, the coaches don’t. National Express ran on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day in 2025, with 355 journeys to 96 destinations on Christmas Day alone. Its Christmas Day network included route 810, which links London Victoria and Heathrow with Winchester, Southampton coach station on Harbour Parade and Portsmouth. On normal days route 032 runs up to 14 times a day from Victoria via Heathrow and takes about two and a half hours. The 2026 festive timetable hasn’t been published yet, and from Harbour Parade you will still need a taxi to the cruise terminal with your luggage.

London and Heathrow on the big days

If your journey starts with a flight or a London hotel, remember that London’s transport shuts down too. In 2025 there was no Tube or Elizabeth line on Christmas Day, and on Boxing Day the Tube ran a Sunday service while the Elizabeth line and the Heathrow Express didn’t run at all. The Tube ran through the night on New Year’s Eve. Heathrow Express and the Elizabeth line have both had closures between Christmas and New Year in recent years, so the Piccadilly line is the usual fallback for Heathrow. Heathrow Express expects to publish its festive plans in October, and TfL usually confirms its plans in early December.

Driving: roadworks lifted, but the roads are busy

National Highways lifts most roadworks on motorways and major A roads over Christmas. In 2024 more than 95% were cleared from 20 December to 2 January, including a stretch of the M27 near Southampton, and in 2025 more than 90% were lifted from 21 December. The roads are still busy: the RAC expected a record 37.5 million getaway journeys before Christmas 2025, with Christmas Eve the busiest single day. On the M3, the junction 9 improvement works at Winchester are still under way, and last Christmas the work paused but the speed limits stayed in place.

A private transfer on the days trains don’t run

This is where a booked car earns its keep. We take bookings 24/7, so a driver can collect you from home, a London hotel, Heathrow or Gatwick and drop you outside your terminal, then be waiting when the ship comes back in January. Your driver tracks your flight or the ship, the car is yours alone with your luggage included, and the fixed fare is confirmed before you pay. Book as soon as you have your cruise dates: you can get an instant fare, or see our Heathrow, Gatwick and London transfer pages.

Booking a car for a festive sailing: what to sort out before December

Because the festive calendar squeezes so many departures into a few days, cars get booked up before cabins sell out. Reserve as soon as you know your terminal and boarding time, tell us how many large cases you are bringing, and mention anyone you need to collect on the way. Our saloons seat four and hold two large cases; once wrapped presents and cold-weather clothing are involved, families are often better off in an MPV that seats six with four cases.

Give the journey home the same thought. A cruise returning over the Boxing Day bank holiday on Monday 28 December, or close to New Year's Day, lands you in the quietest week of the transport year. Booking the return alongside the outbound costs 1.8 times the single fare, and it means a driver is already assigned to watch for your ship rather than you hunting for a car at six in the morning.

  • A fixed fare per vehicle, agreed when you book, so nothing changes on the day
  • Extra time allowed for frost on country lanes and fog on the M25 and M3
  • Ship and flight tracking on both legs of the trip
  • Pay by card in advance or settle with the driver

Relatives arriving for the holidays can use the same service year-round, from Heathrow or Gatwick straight to your door.

Quick answers

Do trains run to Southampton on Christmas Day 2026?

South Western Railway hasn’t published its Christmas 2026 timetable yet. In 2024 and 2025 there were no SWR trains on Christmas Day or Boxing Day, so it is safest to plan on the same.

Is there a coach to Southampton on Christmas Day?

National Express ran a Christmas Day service in 2025 that included route 810 from London Victoria and Heathrow to Southampton coach station. Its 2026 festive timetable is not out yet.

When is the Boxing Day bank holiday in 2026?

Boxing Day falls on Saturday 26 December 2026, so the substitute bank holiday is Monday 28 December.

Can I book a transfer to Southampton cruise terminal on Christmas Day?

Yes. We take bookings 24/7, subject to availability, and your fixed fare is confirmed before you pay. Book early for festive dates.

How far ahead should we book a car for a sailing between 19 and 22 December?

As early as you can, ideally when you book the cruise. Those four days carry most of the festive departures, so demand for cars is concentrated into a very short window. Booking early lets us match the right vehicle to your group and luggage, and you will have the fare agreed long before the Christmas rush begins.

What if fog or a storm means our ship docks later than planned after Christmas?

On the day you disembark we watch the ship's approach and time the driver to its real arrival. A ship held up by bad weather in the Channel will not leave you stranded, because the collection follows the moment you actually come ashore, not to a time written down weeks earlier.
