Almost every American on the Cruise Critic and Rick Steves boards gets the same advice: fly in at least a day early. The next question is where to sleep. Each of the three options changes what your embarkation morning looks like, what you pay, and how much of England you see. Here is how they compare.

  • Southampton hotels: 10 minutes to the ship
  • Heathrow hotels: 75–95 minutes to the ship
  • London hotels: 2 hours plus, but a day of sightseeing
  • Book cruise-night hotels early in summer

Why one night early is the minimum

Ships from Southampton close check-in about an hour before sailing, usually between 3 pm and 4 pm. An overnight flight from the East Coast lands at Heathrow between 6 am and 10 am, which sounds like plenty of margin until a two-hour delay, a long immigration line and a Friday on the M3 eat it. The lines will not hold the ship. Arriving the day before turns that risk into a pleasant evening, and it also puts you in the right time zone before you board. Two nights is better still if you want to see London properly; the cruise itself will not bring you back.

The three choices side by side

Stay inTypical hotel costMorning journey to the shipBest for
Southampton city centre£90–£200 ($120–$270)10 minutes by taxi, or a walk for the nearest terminalsAnyone who wants the calmest embarkation morning, families, people on early Cunard check-in slots
Heathrow airport hotels£110–£250 ($150–$335)75–95 minutes by car, no London trafficLate-arriving flights, one-night stays, people who have already seen London
Central London£180–£400 ($240–$535)2 to 2.5 hours by car, or the train from Waterloo plus a taxiTwo or three pre-cruise nights, first visits, anyone pairing the cruise with a London break

Hotel ranges are typical mid-week shoulder-season rates for a standard double and vary a great deal by date. Dollar figures use £1 = $1.34.

Staying in Southampton

Southampton is a working port city rather than a resort, but its hotels are good value, its medieval walls and old town are worth an evening stroll, and the West Quay shopping centre and waterfront restaurants are ten minutes from every terminal. The names that come up again and again in the forums are the Premier Inn at West Quay and at Cumberland Place, the Novotel and Ibis by the station, the Moxy in the city centre, the Leonardo Royal Grand Harbour beside the Western Docks, and the Holiday Inn on Herbert Walker Avenue, which is a short walk from the Mayflower and City terminals. Several of them sell "park and cruise" packages for drivers. Book early for summer Saturdays and for any Cunard transatlantic departure, when the whole city fills.

The practical advantage is enormous. You wake up, have breakfast, and a ten-minute taxi or a pre-booked car has you at the terminal for your allocated slot with no motorway in between. If you self-disembark at the end of the cruise, a Southampton hotel also lets you drop bags and spend a last day in the city before a late flight.

Staying at Heathrow

If your flight lands in the evening, or you have already done London, an airport hotel is the efficient choice. The Sofitel at Terminal 5, the Hilton Garden Inn and Sheraton on the Bath Road, and the Premier Inns around the perimeter all take a shuttle or a few minutes in a taxi from arrivals. In the morning your car collects you from the lobby and goes straight onto the M25 and M3, missing London altogether, and you are at the ship in about 90 minutes. This is also the set-up the cruise lines assume for their own coach transfers, which pick up at Heathrow and at one or two named airport hotels.

Staying in London

For a first visit, two or three nights in London before the cruise is the trip most people remember. The trade-off is the embarkation morning. From a central hotel it is two hours or more by road to Southampton, and longer if you leave after 8 am on a weekday. The train is a good alternative if you can manage your own luggage: Waterloo to Southampton Central in about 1 hour 20, then a taxi to the terminal. A pre-booked car takes the luggage question away entirely; it collects you from the hotel lobby at a time that matches your boarding slot and delivers you to the terminal door for a fixed fare of about £176 for a sedan or £261 for a minivan, which for four people is roughly $87 each.

A sample plan that works

  • Day 1: land at Heathrow in the morning, private car into London, check in, gentle afternoon, early night.
  • Day 2: full day in London.
  • Day 3: car from the hotel at 10 am, terminal at midday for a 12:30 boarding slot, sail at 4 pm.
  • Return day: self-disembark at 8 am, car to Heathrow by 10, flight after 1 pm; or a Southampton hotel and a next-morning flight if you would rather not rush.

Whichever you choose, book the transfer once your boarding time is known and check it against the ship's terminal. Our guide to arrival times at Southampton explains how the check-in windows work.

Staying over before a winter or festive sailing

A hotel night before boarding makes even more sense once the clocks go back. Long-haul flights get held by storms, the M3 can be foggy first thing, and December evenings are dark by late afternoon. Whether you stay near the docks, by Heathrow or in central London, a collection from the hotel the next morning means you are not depending on a transatlantic arrival or an early train on sailing day.

Christmas adds a practical twist. Most festive cruises leave between Saturday 19 and Tuesday 22 December 2026, so hotels close to the Southampton waterfront can be heavily booked on those nights. A Heathrow or London hotel followed by a car down the next morning is a sensible alternative, and our fare is fixed per vehicle wherever you start, with your luggage included.

  • Airport to hotel the evening before, with the flight tracked in case it is late
  • Hotel to terminal the next morning, timed to your boarding slot
  • No early train in the dark with cases on a winter morning
  • Space in an MPV for up to 6 people if family are joining the trip

For a more memorable night before, our Chewton Glen country hotel chauffeur takes you to the New Forest, which also makes a fine winter break without a ship at all.

Questions cruisers ask about the night before

Which Southampton hotels are closest to the cruise terminals?

The Holiday Inn on Herbert Walker Avenue and the Leonardo Royal Grand Harbour are closest to the Western Docks terminals (Mayflower, City and Horizon). The Premier Inn West Quay and the city-centre hotels are within a ten-minute taxi of all five terminals, including Ocean and QEII in the Eastern Docks.

Is it cheaper to stay in Southampton or London?

Southampton, usually by a wide margin. A comparable hotel is often half the London price, and the transfer to the ship is a £10 taxi rather than a £200 car or a train fare.

Can I get to Southampton from a London hotel without handling my bags?

Yes. A pre-booked private car collects you from the lobby and the driver loads the cases; at the terminal porters take them from the trunk. That is the main reason cruisers pay more for a car than for the train.

Do cruise line hotel packages include the transfer?

Usually yes, for the line's designated hotel and their coach. Check the price against booking the hotel and a private car separately; for two or more people the separate option is often cheaper and gives you a wider choice of hotels.

What if my flight lands in the morning of sailing day?

You can make it from Heathrow if the flight is on time and a car is waiting, but there is no margin. Every experienced cruiser on the forums advises against it. If it is unavoidable, book a private car rather than the coach, and self-check-in online so the terminal process is as quick as possible.

Is it worth staying the night before a Christmas cruise from Southampton?

For most people, yes. Winter flights are more prone to delay, and festive sailing days are busy at the port. Being in a hotel the night before, whether in Southampton, by Heathrow or in London, takes the pressure off. Local hotels fill quickly for the 19 to 22 December 2026 departures, so book the room early.

If a winter storm delays my flight, can you still take me to the hotel?

Yes. The driver follows your flight, so if it lands late because of weather, they adjust and meet you when you arrive. We then take you to your hotel as planned, and the following morning's pickup for the ship stays the same unless you ask us to change it.
