Which Eurostar can you catch after disembarking?

This is the question that decides the whole day, so here is the working. Ships are usually alongside by about 06:00, but nobody leaves until Border Force and the port have cleared the ship. When you get off depends on how you disembark:

How you leave the shipIn the carAt St Pancras (typical)Eurostar to book
Self-disembarkation, carrying your own bags08:00–08:3010:15–11:1512:30 or later
Assisted, early luggage tag08:45–09:1511:00–12:0013:30 or later
Assisted, standard luggage tag09:30–10:1511:45–13:0014:30 or later

The drive time in the table allows for a normal weekday run into London. Eurostar asks Standard and Plus passengers to be at St Pancras 75 minutes before departure and Premier passengers 45 minutes before; the ticket gates close 30 minutes before departure (15 for Premier). Since the EU's Entry/Exit System began, travellers from outside the EU register a photo and fingerprints at the border on their first trip, so do not trim the 75 minutes.

If you are tempted by an earlier train, ask the cruise line whether you can self-disembark, keep one small case each, and book a fare you can change. For the reasoning behind these times, see our guide to how early you can leave the ship; the same timings apply to trains.

Arriving by Eurostar to join your cruise

Eurostar is a natural way to reach a Southampton cruise from France, Belgium or the Netherlands, or after a few days in Paris. The car takes the strain out of the last leg: no crossing London on the Underground with cases, no train from Waterloo and no taxi queue at Southampton Central.

  • Tell us your train. The driver tracks it and is waiting at Eurostar arrivals with a name board, whether you are early or late.
  • Allow for check-in. Cruise lines give each cabin a check-in slot, usually between late morning and mid-afternoon, and all-aboard is normally about two hours before the ship sails. With 2 to 2¾ hours on the road from St Pancras, aim to be off the train at least four hours before the end of your slot.
  • Coming the day before is safer. If your train would land in London after midday, spend the night in London or Southampton. Our London hotel to cruise terminal transfer picks up from any hotel the next morning.

Where we meet you and drop you at St Pancras

St Pancras has its own accessible set-down and pick-up point on Pancras Road, on the side of the station facing King's Cross. Cars can stop there to load and unload but cannot be left unattended, so on a drop-off the driver unloads your cases at the kerb and you follow the signs to Eurostar departures. On a pick-up from a Eurostar, the driver meets you inside the station with a name board and walks you to the car.

The same arrangement works for the other services at St Pancras: Thameslink, East Midlands Railway trains from Sheffield, Nottingham and Leicester, and Southeastern high-speed trains from Kent. King's Cross is across the road, and we have a separate page for King's Cross transfers.

Car or train between Southampton and St Pancras?

There is no direct train. The rail route is a taxi from the dock to Southampton Central, a South Western Railway train to London Waterloo of about 1 hour 20 minutes on the fast services, then the Underground across London to King's Cross St Pancras with your luggage. Door to door it rarely takes less than three hours, and every change means lifting cases.

The car is a single leg of about two to two and three-quarter hours. Four people sharing an MPV pay about £53 each, which is close to the combined cost of off-peak rail tickets and a taxi, and you sit down once. If you are travelling alone with a single case and plenty of time, the train is the cheaper option, and we would say so.

Ship to St Pancras in winter: Eurostar connections after a December or January cruise

Plenty of cruise passengers continue to Paris or Brussels by Eurostar, and in winter that onward leg has a firm deadline: check-in and security close well before departure, and tickets are tied to a specific train. The 82–83 mile drive from Southampton to St Pancras is straightforward on a clear day, but fog on the M3 and slow traffic into central London on a wet winter morning can add time. Your driver tracks the ship and factors in the weather before giving you an arrival time.

Ships are normally alongside by about 06:00, though a storm can delay berthing for several hours. If you are coming back from a festive itinerary and travelling on to the Continent for New Year, pick a later Eurostar than you might in summer. Should the ship run late, the driver will tell you early whether your train is still realistic, so that you can change it before check-in closes.

  • Ship watched from the night before, with the pickup moved if weather delays docking
  • Arrival time at St Pancras given once you are in the car, allowing for fog and rain
  • Drop close to the station so you are not hauling cases along Euston Road
  • Room for winter coats and luggage, with four large cases in the MPV

If you are staying a night in London before the Eurostar, our theatre and fine dining chauffeur makes a winter evening out easy, and the Southampton to London chauffeur covers the drive up.

Questions

How much is a transfer from Southampton cruise terminal to St Pancras?

From £198 one way for a saloon (up to 4 people, 2 large cases) and from £213 for an MPV (up to 6 people, 4 cases). The price is per vehicle, luggage included, and the same in either direction. Fridays, weekend mornings and peak times cost a little more; the exact fixed fare is shown before you pay.

How long does the drive from Southampton cruise port to St Pancras take?

It is 82–83 miles. With clear roads the drive takes about 2 hours; allow 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 45 on a weekday morning, when traffic into central London is heaviest.

Which Eurostar can I book after a Southampton cruise?

If you carry your own bags off the ship, a train at 12:30 or later is realistic. With an early luggage tag, look at 13:30 or later; with a standard tag, 14:30 or later. Eurostar asks Standard and Plus passengers to arrive 75 minutes before departure.

Where does the driver drop us at St Pancras?

At the station's accessible set-down and pick-up point on Pancras Road, between St Pancras and King's Cross. Eurostar departures are signposted from the entrance.

Can you meet us off a Eurostar and take us to the ship?

Yes. Give us your train number and the driver tracks it, meets you at Eurostar arrivals with a name board and loads your cases. Waiting time for a delayed train is included.

Is a private car better than the train from Southampton to St Pancras?

For one person travelling light, the train via London Waterloo is cheaper. With cruise luggage, or for three or more people, the car usually costs a similar amount per head and avoids a taxi to Southampton Central, a two-hour train and a Tube change with cases.

Do you meet Christmas and repositioning cruises for the drive to St Pancras?

Yes. We collect at all five terminals after festive itineraries, winter sailings and repositioning voyages, then drive to St Pancras for Eurostar or onward domestic trains. Give us the ship, terminal and train time, and we will agree a fixed fare per vehicle before you travel, with all your luggage included.

What if a winter storm makes our ship late on the day of our Eurostar?

The driver tracks the ship's live position rather than the scheduled arrival, so the pickup follows any delay. Once you are in the car, you will get a realistic arrival time at St Pancras, allowing for fog and London traffic, and can contact Eurostar about a later train if the gap has become too narrow.
