Stansted is the furthest of London's main airports from Southampton, about 124–125 miles round the M25, so it pays to plan the day properly. A private car takes you from the ship to the Stansted terminal drop-off in one leg, from £253 per car with luggage, and the driver waits at your terminal while the ship clears.

Which flight to book from Stansted after a cruise

Stansted is mostly short-haul: it is Ryanair's largest base and is also used by Jet2, easyJet and several holiday airlines. That helps, because short-haul check-in and bag drop close earlier than long-haul, typically 40 minutes to an hour before departure depending on the airline. The longer drive is what you have to plan around.

Standard luggage tag09:30–10:1512:15–13:1515:30 or later16:00 or later

These times assume about 2 hours 45 minutes on the road, which allows for the M25 between the M3 and the M11, the stretch most likely to slow you down. They also leave time for security, which at Stansted can be slow at peak times. If your ship is late alongside, the driver waits at the terminal at no extra charge, but your flight will not, so build in the margin. The full reasoning is in our guide to the earliest flight after a Southampton cruise.

The route and what can slow it down

From the Eastern Docks (Ocean and QEII terminals) or the Western Docks (City, Horizon and Mayflower), the driver joins the M3 north, takes the M25 clockwise past Heathrow and round the north of London, then the M11 up to Stansted. It is motorway nearly all the way, with services at Fleet on the M3 and South Mimms on the M25 if anyone needs a stop.

The M25 is the variable. Weekday mornings around Heathrow (junctions 12 to 16) and the stretch from the M1 to the M11 are the usual slow points, and roadworks can add half an hour. Our drivers watch live traffic and will go through London instead if that is quicker on the day; the fixed fare does not change.

Flying into Stansted to join a cruise

The same car works in reverse. Give us your flight number and the driver tracks the landing time, meets you in arrivals with a name board and loads your cases. Because the drive to Southampton is close to three hours, try to land by late morning for an afternoon check-in slot, or fly in the day before and stay at a hotel near the port. The outbound fares and details are on our Stansted, Luton and London City page.

Coach, train or car from Southampton to Stansted?

There is no direct train or coach from the cruise terminals to Stansted. By rail you would go from Southampton Central to Waterloo, across London on the Underground to Liverpool Street, then the Stansted Express: three changes with luggage and well over three hours.

For two or more people with cruise luggage, the car is the practical option. Four people in an MPV pay about £67 each, and there is nothing to carry between the ship and the terminal.

Ship to Stansted in winter: allowing for weather at sea and on the M25

Stansted sits on the far side of London from the cruise port, and the 124–125 mile drive takes the M3, the M25 round the western and northern sides of the capital, and the M11. On winter mornings those orbital miles are where fog and slow traffic build, so we advise a wider gap before a flight than in summer. Your driver tracks the ship from the night before and does not charge for waiting while it clears, so you are not rushing off the gangway.

Ships usually berth at Southampton by about 06:00, though a winter storm can hold one offshore or alter the berthing time. Many passengers coming back from festive itineraries fly on from Stansted to Europe, and holiday-season flights are often full, so missing one can be expensive. If docking slips, your driver will give you an honest arrival time at the airport once you are in the car, leaving room to talk to the airline before check-in closes.

  • No waiting charge while the ship clears after a late winter arrival
  • Fog and M25 traffic factored into the flight gap we recommend
  • Drop-off at the terminal forecourt rather than a car park bus stop
  • MPV for families with four large cases from a festive cruise

If you are in East Anglia for the rest of the winter, our Stansted to Cambridge chauffeur covers flights in and out of the airport all year.

Questions

How much is a transfer from Southampton cruise terminal to Stansted Airport?

From £253 one way in a saloon (up to 4 people, 2 large cases) and from £268 in an MPV (up to 6 people, 4 cases). The fare is per vehicle and includes luggage, the airport drop-off charge and waiting while you leave the ship.

How long does it take to drive from Southampton docks to Stansted?

About 124–125 miles via the M3, M25 and M11. Allow 2 hours 30 minutes on a clear road and up to 3 hours 15 minutes when the M25 is busy.

What is the earliest flight I can book from Stansted after a Southampton cruise?

For short-haul with hand luggage only, around 14:00 if you self-disembark. With checked bags or a standard luggage tag, book 15:30 or later. A same-day long-haul connection from Stansted is rare; if you need one, ask us before booking.

Where does the driver drop us at Stansted?

At the terminal drop-off zone in front of the single terminal building. The drop-off charge is included in the fare.

Can we book Stansted to the ship for the start of the cruise as well?

Yes. The fare is the same in that direction; we track the flight and the driver meets you in arrivals. Book both legs together and the pair costs 1.9 times the single fare.

Can you take us from a festive or winter cruise to Stansted?

Yes. We collect at whichever of the five terminals your ship uses, after Christmas and New Year itineraries, selected winter sailings and repositioning voyages, and drive round the M25 to Stansted. One price covers the car and all your cases, and it is settled at booking. If you also fly in from Stansted, booking both directions together is cheaper than two singles.

How do you track a ship that is delayed by bad weather?

Before leaving to collect you, the driver looks up where the ship is and when the port expects it alongside. If the vessel is late, the pickup moves with it and there is no waiting charge. Once you are in the car, you get a realistic arrival time at Stansted so you can contact the airline if needed.
