Why Gatwick From Southampton Needs Planning

Distanceapprox. 90 miles
Typical drive1 hr 35 min – 1 hr 55 min
Peak / winter2 hr 15 min – 2 hr 45 min (Friday afternoons, M25 J9–J7)
Main roadsM27 → M3 → M25 (J12 to J7) → M23 (J9); alternative via A3 or A27/A24

Unlike Heathrow, Gatwick sits south of London in West Sussex, so there is no single obvious road from Southampton. The usual route is the M27 or M3 north to the M25, east around the southern side of the orbital to Junction 7, then down the M23 to the airport spur at Junction 9. It is around 90 miles. When the M25 is moving it is the quickest option, but the stretch past Leatherhead and Reigate is notorious for slow traffic, especially on Friday afternoons and around school holidays.

Our chauffeurs choose the route on the day rather than by habit. When the M25 is closed or jammed, the A3 through Guildford with a cross-country leg towards Crawley, or the M27 and A27 along the coast before turning north on the A24 or A23, can save real time. These alternatives are not shortcuts on paper, but they avoid the queues that can turn a two-hour journey into three. We check live traffic before setting off and again en route.

Gatwick has two terminals, North and South, connected by a free shuttle, and airlines are split between them. Allocations change from time to time, so we confirm your terminal against your booking and check it again before travel. Both terminals have dedicated drop-off zones with a charge, and that fee is included in your fixed quote. For arrivals, your chauffeur waits inside the terminal with a name board, so you are not hunting for a car park pickup after a long flight.

Who we drive

Built Around Who's Travelling

Corporate Executives

Gatwick serves many European business routes, and executives from Southampton, Eastleigh and Fareham often find it better for short-haul flights. A chauffeur means a private office for the two-hour drive, with Wi-Fi and chargers. We drop you at the correct terminal for your airline and, on your return, monitor the flight so the car is waiting whatever the arrival time.

VIP Travellers

For guests staying at Lime Wood or Chewton Glen in the New Forest, or at a private address near Winchester, we provide a discreet S-Class or Maybach transfer to Gatwick. Your chauffeur keeps the journey private and unhurried, and coordinates with any premium check-in or lounge service you have arranged so that the handover at the terminal is smooth.

Families with Heavy Luggage

Gatwick is a major holiday airport, and families travelling from Hampshire often carry several suitcases, a pushchair and car seats. The V-Class carries up to seven passengers and six or seven large cases in a single vehicle. We fit child seats before collection and drop you directly at the departures entrance, avoiding the long-stay car park and the transfer bus.

International Visitors

Some cruise passengers fly into Gatwick and need to reach Southampton for embarkation. Your chauffeur meets you after customs and drives directly to your cruise terminal or to a Southampton hotel for the night before sailing. You avoid a train journey with changes and a final taxi, and arrive at the port with your luggage handled from start to finish.

On this routeDirect and door to door with one professional chauffeurSouthampton taxis are not set up for a 180-mile round trip; meters, return mileage and terminal drop-off charges often make the final price unpredictable. There is no simple fast rail link from Southampton to Gatwick: you face either a slow cross-Sussex stopping service or a change of trains, often via London or the coast line, plus a taxi to Southampton Central. Weekend engineering works and replacement buses on the Sussex lines can add significantly to the journey.

FAQs

Questions Before You Book

What if my flight into Gatwick is delayed?

We track every inbound flight in real time, so your chauffeur adjusts to delays or early arrivals automatically. 60 minutes of free waiting is included from the actual landing time, giving you time to clear passport control and collect luggage. If your flight is diverted to another airport, we will contact you and arrange the best collection option.

How early should I leave Southampton for a 7am Gatwick flight?

For a 7am short-haul flight, we usually suggest leaving Southampton between 3:15am and 3:45am. Roads are clear at that hour, so the drive is often nearer 1 hour 35 minutes, leaving time for bag drop and security. For long-haul flights, add around 30 minutes. We confirm the timings with you when booking.

Do you charge extra for very early or late-night Gatwick transfers?

Early departures are common for Gatwick, especially for summer holiday flights, and we cover them routinely with the same vehicles and chauffeurs as daytime work. Every fare is fixed before you book: early-morning and late-night journeys have no meter, and any peak-time or holiday surcharge is shown on the booking page before you pay. Your quote is fixed when you book, including fuel and the Gatwick drop-off charge, so there is no surprise on the day.

How much luggage can I take?

The E-Class and S-Class each take up to three passengers with two large cases plus hand luggage. For larger groups or more luggage, the V-Class takes up to seven passengers and six or seven large cases. Let us know about skis, golf bags or a pushchair and we will recommend the right vehicle.

What is your cancellation policy?

If your plans change, let us know as soon as possible by phone on 020 8888 9988 or by replying to your booking confirmation. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before your pickup. If your flight is rescheduled rather than cancelled, we will simply move your booking to the new time at no extra effort on your part.

Which Gatwick terminal do I need?

Gatwick has two terminals, North and South, linked by a free shuttle train. Airlines are split between them, and some carriers operate from both depending on the route. We confirm your terminal against your booking reference and check again before travel, as allocations do change, then drop you at the correct departures entrance.

Do you go via the M25 or another route?

The M25 and M23 are usually the quickest route, but the M25 can be badly congested between Junctions 9 and 7. Your chauffeur checks live traffic before departure and may use the A3 or the A27 and A24 instead if they are moving better. Your fixed quote does not change with the route.

Can you collect from an address outside Southampton?

Yes. We regularly collect from Winchester, Romsey, Fareham, the New Forest and the Hamble peninsula for Gatwick transfers, and can pick up from Portsmouth or Chichester on request. For non-airport pickups, a free waiting allowance is included, and we can arrange additional stops to collect other passengers.

Ready When You Are
