London to Southampton: train, coach or private car?
Book your cruise transfer in under a minute. One price for the whole car, agreed before you travel – no meter, no surge.

Southampton's cruise terminals sit about 80 miles south-west of central London. There are four realistic ways to cover it on embarkation day, and the right one depends on how many of you are travelling, how much luggage a cruise involves, and how much buffer you want before check-in closes. Here is the honest comparison.
The four options at a glance
| Option | Typical journey | Priced |
|---|---|---|
| Train (Waterloo to Southampton Central) | About 1h 15m to 1h 30m, plus a taxi to your terminal | Per person |
| National Express coach (from Victoria) | Usually 2h 30m or more | Per person |
| Cruise line coach | Set departure points and times | Per person |
| Private transfer, door to door | Around 2 hours from central London | Per car, from £176 fixed |
Taking the train with cruise luggage
South Western Railway runs frequent services from London Waterloo to Southampton Central. The catch is that no train stops at a cruise terminal: from Southampton Central it is a further 10 to 15 minutes by taxi, and on turnaround days the station rank queues just when several ships are boarding. You will also be lifting cases over the gap and into luggage racks that were not designed for a fortnight of formal nights. It is a good option for one or two light travellers; check for weekend engineering works before relying on it.
The coaches
National Express is the cheapest seat to Southampton but the slowest door, and you still need a taxi at the far end. Cruise line coaches remove that last hop and their timing is guaranteed to suit the ship, but they leave from fixed points at fixed times, and for two or more travellers the per-person pricing adds up quickly — we have broken down the real numbers in our cruise line coach vs private car comparison.
When the private car wins
A fixed-fare private transfer is priced per car, not per seat. For a couple with full luggage it is usually within touching distance of two peak train tickets plus taxis at both ends; for a family or two couples sharing, it is normally cheaper outright — and it is the only option that starts at your front door or hotel lobby and ends at the correct terminal for your ship. Fares are fixed in advance: London from £176, Heathrow from £146, Gatwick from £193. Check your exact fare and book online.
London to Southampton in winter: which option holds up?
All four ways of getting from London to Southampton work on an ordinary winter weekday, but they cope with disruption differently. Rail is hit hardest, with engineering works tending to cluster around Christmas and New Year and little or no rail service on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. A coach shares the motorway with everyone else and runs to its own timetable, which leaves little room for a late start or a heavy bag.
A private car is the one option where you set the time. Whether you are heading down for a festive itinerary or a repositioning voyage, or simply travelling to Southampton on business in January, the fare is fixed per vehicle, the car is heated, and the driver adjusts the route if fog settles over the M3. For journeys to a ship, we time the trip to your check-in window rather than to a departure board.
- Unaffected by holiday engineering works and replacement buses
- Door-to-door, so no cold platform or coach station wait
- Pickup time you choose, adjusted for fog or frost
- Luggage included in the fare, however much winter clothing you pack
For year-round business travel the same journey is covered by Southampton to London and our Southampton business park and university chauffeur.
Questions
Can I get from London to Southampton on Christmas Day or Boxing Day?
By car, yes. There is little or no rail service on either day, so a private transfer is the realistic choice, especially if you are joining MSC Preziosa on Christmas Day. Boxing Day's bank holiday falls on Monday 28 December in 2026, which can also affect rail and coach timetables that week.
Do you run London to Southampton for winter and repositioning cruises?
We do, across the winter. That includes the festive departures clustered from 19 to 22 December 2026 and end-of-season repositioning voyages such as Celebrity Apex's crossing to Port Canaveral on 18 October. We collect from homes, offices and hotels across London and take you to the correct terminal.
If my ship's timings change because of weather, how do you adjust?
For a return from a ship, the driver tracks its arrival and moves the collection if a storm delays it. On the way out, if the cruise line changes your check-in time, tell us and we will shift the pickup. Either way the fare stays as agreed.
Is there a direct train to the cruise terminals?
No. The nearest station is Southampton Central, a 10 to 15 minute taxi from all five terminals. Our terminal guide shows where each one is.
How long is the drive from London?
Around two hours from central London depending on traffic and where your ship docks. We plan the pickup time around your cruise line's check-in window with a sensible buffer.
What does a private transfer cost?
From £176 per car from London, fixed when you book — no meter and no surge. The fare covers any of the five Southampton terminals.
