Getting In and Out of Prestbury Park on Race Day
Cheltenham Racecourse at Prestbury Park is an extraordinary place to watch jump racing and a difficult place to reach on a big day. During the Festival in March, tens of thousands of racegoers converge on a town of modest roads, with the A435 Evesham Road, Prestbury village and the routes from the A40 and M5 junctions all carrying race traffic from mid-morning. Leaving after the final race is harder still. A chauffeur turns that into a non-issue: we plan the approach the day before, drop you near the entrance you need and position the car for a prompt getaway.
Most racegoers come from further away than they expect. From central London it is roughly 100 miles via the M40 and A40 through Oxford and Burford, or the M4 and the A419/A417 past Swindon. From Southampton and Winchester, Woodford's home ground, the A34 to the M4 and the A419/A417 runs to about 95 miles. On the A417, the Air Balloon and Birdlip stretch has long been a notorious bottleneck and has been the subject of major upgrade works, so we check its status before every race-day departure.
Festival week is about more than four days of racing. Many guests stay at Ellenborough Park, which overlooks the course, or at The Queens Hotel on the Promenade, No.131 or The Greenway at Shurdington, and need daily shuttles, dinner transfers and a Saturday run home. We can provide a dedicated chauffeur and car for the whole week, or coordinate a fleet for a corporate box. The same service applies to the November Meeting and Cheltenham's winter and spring fixtures, when crowds are lighter but the roads are no less tricky.

Built Around Who's Travelling
Corporate Hospitality Hosts
Companies hosting clients in hospitality at the Festival need every guest there before the first race and safely home after the last. We collect from London offices, hotels and Hampshire homes, coordinate multiple vehicles to arrive together, and manage departures so no one is left in the car park. One fixed quote covers the full fleet.
VIP Racegoers & Owners
Owners, trainers' guests and regular Festival-goers value discretion and timing above all. An S-Class or Maybach collects you from home or your Cotswold hotel, your chauffeur knows the race-day approach, and the car is ready when you choose to leave, whether that is straight after the Gold Cup or after the last race.
Groups & Families with Luggage
Groups staying for several days arrive with suitcases, overnight bags and race-day outfits. The V-Class seats seven with space for six or seven large cases, so everyone travels together from London or Hampshire to the hotel, then to the course each morning. No designated driver is needed, and everyone enjoys the day.
International Racing Fans
Racing fans from Ireland and further afield often fly into Heathrow, Bristol or Birmingham. We meet you in arrivals with a name board, track your flight, and drive you to your Cheltenham hotel. Across the week we can add trips to the Cotswolds, Sudeley Castle or Gloucester Cathedral, then return you to the airport after Gold Cup day.
Woodford Chauffeur Cars vs Taxis vs UK Rail
| Woodford Chauffeur Cars | Standard taxi / minicab | UK rail | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price certainty | Fixed quote: fuel, tolls, congestion charge/ULEZ, parking and VAT included | Metered or surge-priced; extras often added | Advance fares vary; walk-up and peak fares are high |
| Door to door | Yes: from your address to the exact terminal, entrance or lobby | Usually, but few local firms cover long distances well | No: station transfers at both ends |
| Luggage | Carried for you; the V-Class takes 6–7 large cases | Limited boot space in a standard saloon | You carry it, including on stairs and changes |
| Vehicle | Mercedes-Benz E-Class, S-Class and V-Class | Varies widely | Shared carriage; a seat isn't always guaranteed |
| Driver vetting | Licensed, DBS-checked professional chauffeurs | Licensed, but standards vary | Not applicable |
| Delays | Flight tracking and live re-routing around incidents | The driver may cancel or re-price | Strikes, engineering works and cancellations |
| Work & privacy | Quiet private cabin with Wi-Fi for confidential calls | Little privacy | Public carriage; patchy signal |
| On this route | Direct and door to door with one professional chauffeur | Local taxis are booked solid weeks ahead of Festival week, and those available rarely wait at the course or wish to make a 100-mile run back to London or Hampshire after racing. | Reaching Cheltenham Spa by train from London means a train from London Paddington, some services with a change, then a shuttle bus or long walk to Prestbury Park, with heavy crowds on platforms after racing and occasional engineering works on Festival-week weekends. |

Questions Before You Book
What time should we leave London or Hampshire for the Festival?
Allow at least three hours on Festival days from central London or Southampton, even though the drive normally takes around two. For a first race in the early afternoon, most clients leave by 9am or 9:30am, giving time for traffic near Prestbury and a relaxed lunch before racing begins.
What happens if traffic delays us on race day?
Your chauffeur watches live traffic and A417 conditions throughout, and will switch to the A40 via Oxford or approach from the north through the M5 if the usual route stalls. For pickups, a free waiting allowance is included, and on race-day hire the car simply waits for you.
How do we find the car after the last race?
We agree a pickup point and approximate time before you go in, usually away from the main crush. Message your chauffeur when you are ready to leave; many clients stay for a drink to let the crowds clear, then enjoy a calmer journey home.
Can you bring us home late at night after racing?
Yes. Many clients stay on for dinner in Cheltenham or at their hotel before heading back to London or Hampshire. Every fare is fixed before you book: early-morning and late-night journeys have no meter, and any peak-time or holiday surcharge is shown on the booking page before you pay. Your timings are agreed in advance and confirmed in a single fixed quote. Your chauffeur will have planned the return route around any overnight roadworks on the M4, M40 or A34.
How much luggage can we bring for a Festival stay?
The E-Class and S-Class each take up to three passengers with two large cases. For a group staying several nights, with suitcases, boots and race-day outfits, the V-Class carries up to seven passengers with six or seven large cases, or we can send two vehicles together.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before your pickup. If a race day is abandoned because of frost or waterlogging, call 020 8888 9988 straight away and we will discuss moving your booking. Frost inspections are announced by the racecourse, and we keep an eye on them too, so we can contact you early if racing is in doubt.
Can you provide a car for the whole Festival week?
Yes. A dedicated chauffeur can stay with you from Tuesday to Friday, running daily transfers between your hotel and the course, dinners in Cheltenham or the Cotswolds, and the journey home on Friday evening or Saturday. Book early, as Festival week fills well in advance.
Do you cover race meetings outside the Festival?
Yes. We drive racegoers to the November Meeting, December and New Year fixtures, and the spring meetings, when traffic is lighter and the experience more relaxed. The same chauffeur standards, fixed quotes and planned pickups apply to every race day at Prestbury Park.
