Our Most Travelled Route, Planned to the Kerb
Southampton to London is the road Woodford knows best. Our chauffeurs leave the city and the cruise terminals for the capital every week, so the route is not a sat-nav suggestion but practised judgement: when the M3 roadworks near Basingstoke justify an early start, whether the A316 or the M4 is the better way in through west London, and how long the final two miles to a Mayfair or City address really take at 9am on a Tuesday. That local knowledge is the difference between arriving early and arriving flustered.
The motorway section is usually the easy part. The M27 and M3 carry you past Winchester and Basingstoke to the end of the M3 at Sunbury, after which London takes over: the A316 over Chiswick Bridge or the A4 into Hammersmith and Kensington, then the stop-start of the West End. For the City and Canary Wharf, the route shifts east along the Embankment or Euston Road. We match the route to your exact postcode and time, and our fixed quote already includes the Congestion Charge and ULEZ, so there are no supplements to settle later.
The route serves very different journeys. Executives use it for a meeting in Whitehall or a client lunch in St James's and back to Southampton by evening. Cruise passengers disembarking at the Ocean, Mayflower, City or Horizon terminals go straight to their London hotel without waiting at the Waterloo taxi rank with a week's luggage. And families heading to a West End show, Wimbledon or Twickenham avoid the replacement buses that engineering works often bring to weekend trains.

Built Around Who's Travelling
Corporate Executives
Southampton and Hampshire-based executives with a day of meetings in the City, Mayfair or Whitehall. Your chauffeur collects from home or the office, lets you work on the M3 and drops you outside each appointment. A wait-and-return booking keeps the car nearby, so you are back in Southampton for the evening without depending on the last train.
VIP Travellers
Private clients heading to a gala at the Royal Albert Hall, a dinner in Mayfair or a stay at The Connaught or Claridge's. An S-Class collects you from your Hampshire home and takes you door to door, with your chauffeur waiting through the evening for the return to Southampton. Discretion and punctuality are part of every booking.
Families with Heavy Luggage
Families at the end of a cruise, with suitcases, souvenirs and perhaps a pushchair, heading for a few days in London before flying home. A V-Class meets you at the terminal and carries everything straight to your hotel, avoiding the train to Waterloo and the scramble for a taxi big enough to take everyone.
International Visitors
Overseas cruise passengers or business visitors arriving at Southampton who want to see London without the stress. Your chauffeur meets you at the terminal or hotel, helps with your bags, and drives you into the capital, passing landmarks such as the Houses of Parliament, St Paul's Cathedral and Buckingham Palace on the way to your hotel.
Woodford Chauffeur Cars vs Taxis vs UK Rail
| Woodford Chauffeur Cars | Standard taxi / minicab | UK rail | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price certainty | Fixed quote: fuel, tolls, congestion charge/ULEZ, parking and VAT included | Metered or surge-priced; extras often added | Advance fares vary; walk-up and peak fares are high |
| Door to door | Yes: from your address to the exact terminal, entrance or lobby | Usually, but few local firms cover long distances well | No: station transfers at both ends |
| Luggage | Carried for you; the V-Class takes 6–7 large cases | Limited boot space in a standard saloon | You carry it, including on stairs and changes |
| Vehicle | Mercedes-Benz E-Class, S-Class and V-Class | Varies widely | Shared carriage; a seat isn't always guaranteed |
| Driver vetting | Licensed, DBS-checked professional chauffeurs | Licensed, but standards vary | Not applicable |
| Delays | Flight tracking and live re-routing around incidents | The driver may cancel or re-price | Strikes, engineering works and cancellations |
| Work & privacy | Quiet private cabin with Wi-Fi for confidential calls | Little privacy | Public carriage; patchy signal |
| On this route | Direct and door to door with one professional chauffeur | A Southampton taxi on a meter can quickly become expensive on the 80-mile run, and many drivers are not familiar with London's congestion zones, loading restrictions and hotel set-down points. | Southampton Central has direct trains to London Waterloo, but you still need to get to the station with your luggage and then find a taxi or the Underground at Waterloo, and strikes, engineering works and weekend replacement buses regularly disrupt the line. |

Questions Before You Book
What happens if traffic delays us on the way to London?
We plan departures with a buffer built in for the M3 and London traffic, especially for fixed appointments. If an incident still causes a delay, your chauffeur will reroute using live traffic data and keep you or your assistant informed throughout. For important meetings, we can suggest an earlier start when you book.
Can you collect us from a cruise ship?
Yes, this is one of our most frequent journeys. We track your ship's arrival at the Ocean, Mayflower, City or Horizon terminal and time the pickup to your disembarkation group. A free waiting allowance applies at the terminal, and your chauffeur helps with luggage from the baggage hall to the car.
Is the Congestion Charge included?
Yes. Your fixed quote includes the London Congestion Charge, ULEZ compliance, fuel and VAT. Any change to your itinerary is confirmed with you before it is added, so there are no surprises on the final invoice.
How early should I leave Southampton for a 9am meeting in the City?
We usually recommend leaving Southampton around 6:15 to 6:30am for a 9am City appointment. That allows for the morning build-up on the M3 and the slow final miles through central London. Every fare is fixed before you book: early-morning and late-night journeys have no meter, and any peak-time or holiday surcharge is shown on the booking page before you pay. For West End meetings, a slightly later start is often fine.
How much luggage can I bring?
The E-Class and S-Class take up to 3 passengers with 2 large cases. The V-Class carries up to 7 passengers with 6–7 large cases and is the usual choice for cruise passengers at the end of a long voyage. Let us know about any oversized items when booking.
Can the chauffeur wait and bring me back the same day?
Yes. Many clients book a wait-and-return so they can attend meetings in London and be home in Southampton the same evening. The chauffeur will park nearby and collect you at agreed times. Longer waiting periods can be included in your fixed quote.
Can you drop me at a London airport or station instead?
Yes. We often combine a London drop-off with a later onward journey, for example to St Pancras for the Eurostar or to Heathrow or London City Airport. Just let us know your plans when booking and we will quote for the full itinerary.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before your pickup. If your plans change, please call 020 8888 9988 as soon as possible, and we will do our best to move your booking to another date or time. For cruise pickups, a late change to your ship's arrival is handled automatically because we track the vessel ourselves.
