Main roadsM56 → M6 north → J36 → A590/A591 for Windermere & Ambleside; or M6 J40 → A66 for Keswick and Ullswater

Manchester is the natural gateway to the Lake District for long-haul and European arrivals, and the drive north is straightforward on paper: M56, then the M6 for some 70 miles, then the A590 and A591 into the national park. The reality is that the M6 through Warrington, Wigan and Preston is one of the busiest stretches of motorway in Britain, and the last 20 miles from Kendal onwards are winding, single-carriageway roads that are easy to underestimate after a long flight. A chauffeur who knows both halves of the journey makes the difference.

The Lakes are not one destination. Windermere, Bowness and the hotels on the eastern shore are reached via Junction 36 and the A591 past Kendal. Ambleside, Grasmere and the Langdale valleys sit further along the same road. Keswick, Borrowdale and Bassenthwaite are usually faster via Junction 40 at Penrith and the A66, while Ullswater is reached from Penrith too. We choose the junction based on your hotel, not the postcode, and we warn you in advance if a mountain pass such as Kirkstone is closed.

Most guests arrive with more than a city break's worth of luggage: walking boots, waterproofs, golf bags, perhaps a child's bike. The V-Class handles that easily, while the S-Class and Maybach suit couples heading to Gilpin, Linthwaite House or Holbeck Ghyll for a celebration. Your fixed quote covers fuel, airport parking and VAT, and a stop at a Lakeland deli, a lakeside lunch or the Tebay services farm shop can be added to the itinerary when you book.

Who we drive

Built Around Who's Travelling

Corporate Executives

Executives arriving for leadership retreats, board away-days or conferences at venues such as Brathay Hall or a lakeside hotel. Your chauffeur collects from your Manchester terminal and takes the best M6 junction for your venue, letting you work on the way. Multiple guests on different flights can be grouped or collected individually, all under one fixed quote.

VIP Travellers

High-profile guests and couples marking an anniversary or honeymoon at Gilpin Hotel & Lake House, The Samling or Armathwaite Hall. A Maybach or S-Class meets you discreetly in arrivals and makes the long drive restful, with the option of a scenic lakeshore approach rather than the quickest road. Return transfers and day excursions can be booked together.

Families with Heavy Luggage

Families heading for a week in a lodge or cottage, with suitcases, walking boots, a pushchair and possibly a bike. A V-Class carries the lot comfortably, child seats are fitted on request, and the chauffeur can stop at a supermarket in Kendal or Windermere so you arrive with the essentials already in hand.

International Visitors

Overseas visitors on the trail of Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter or Scafell Pike, often arriving on long-haul flights into Terminal 1 or 2. You are met by name, helped with your luggage and driven through the M6 corridor and into the fells, with your chauffeur pointing out Windermere, Dove Cottage and Hill Top along the way.

On this routeDirect and door to door with one professional chauffeurManchester rank cabs are not set up for a 100-mile run into the fells, often lack space for walking kit and golf bags, and drivers may not know the hotel lanes beyond Windermere.Trains from the airport station head north towards Oxenholme, where most journeys involve a change onto the Windermere branch, and from there you still need a taxi or bus to reach hotels in Ambleside, Grasmere, Keswick or Ullswater — a long day with luggage, and one easily derailed by engineering works or strikes.

FAQs

Questions Before You Book

What happens if my flight into Manchester is delayed?

Your chauffeur tracks your flight live, so a late arrival costs you nothing. 60 minutes of free waiting is included from the actual landing time. If a long delay pushes your arrival into the evening, we can let your hotel know your revised arrival time, which matters at country houses with set dinner sittings or late check-in arrangements.

Which terminal will you meet me at?

We meet at all three Manchester terminals. Your chauffeur waits in the arrivals hall of Terminal 1, 2 or 3 with a name board, and you will receive their name and mobile number before you land. Airport parking and pickup charges are included in your fixed quote.

How long does it take to reach Keswick compared with Windermere?

Windermere is around 85 miles and typically 1 hour 30 to 1 hour 45 minutes via M6 Junction 36. Keswick is further, about 120 miles, and usually just over 2 hours via Junction 40 at Penrith and the A66. Ullswater hotels are also reached from Penrith. Summer traffic and winter weather can add time to either.

Is the drive safe in winter?

Yes, with planning. Our chauffeurs check the M6 over Shap, the A591 and the A66 before every winter departure, and we avoid high passes like Kirkstone when they are icy or closed. If heavy snow or flooding is forecast, we will contact you to discuss an earlier start or alternative route rather than take risks.

I have an early flight home. What time should we leave the Lakes?

For a 9am long-haul departure from Manchester, we would typically collect from Windermere around 4:30am, or nearer 4am from Keswick, to allow for check-in and security. Early starts are routine for us. Every fare is fixed before you book: early-morning and late-night journeys have no meter, and any peak-time or holiday surcharge is shown on the booking page before you pay. Your chauffeur arrives early and helps load the car quietly.

How much luggage can we bring?

The S-Class and Maybach take up to 3 passengers, the S-Class with 2 large cases. The V-Class takes up to 7 passengers and 6–7 large cases, with room for walking kit, golf bags or a pushchair. If you are bringing bikes or other bulky items, let us know when booking so we can plan accordingly.

Can we stop on the way for food or shopping?

Of course. Many guests stop at the Tebay farm shop services on the M6, a supermarket in Kendal, or a café in Windermere before reaching a self-catering property. Short stops are easily accommodated; longer ones can be included in your fixed quote at booking. A free waiting allowance applies to non-airport pickups.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before your pickup. If your flight is cancelled or your plans change, please call 020 8888 9988 as soon as possible and we will try to rearrange your transfer for a new date or time. If severe weather closes roads into the Lakes, we will contact you first to agree the safest alternative.
