The M4 Run and the Last Mile Into Bath
From Heathrow, the route to Bath is simple on a map: west on the M4 for about 85 miles to Junction 18, then south on the A46 into the city. In total it is around 100 miles and usually takes 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours. The M4 is reliable for most of the way, but the smart motorway between Junctions 3 and 12, past Slough and Reading, can slow down at peak times, and holiday traffic heading for the West Country builds on Friday afternoons.
The final part of the journey is the one visitors underestimate. The A46 drops steeply from the M4 to the A4 at the edge of Bath, and the London Road into the city is regularly congested. Once in the centre, there are bus gates, narrow one-way streets and limited stopping points near the Royal Crescent, the Circus and Great Pulteney Street. Our chauffeurs know where they can stop legally and close to your hotel's entrance, which matters when you have luggage on cobbles.
Bath attracts a wide mix of arrivals: leisure visitors at the Royal Crescent Hotel or The Gainsborough, academics and students at the University of Bath on Claverton Down, executives meeting in the city or nearby at Corsham and Chippenham, and wedding guests heading to country houses in the surrounding valleys. Each needs a different drop-off and a different car. We plan around your destination, whether it is the city centre, Lucknam Park at Colerne, or Homewood near Freshford, and fix the price when you book.

Built Around Who's Travelling
Corporate Executives
Executives visiting Bath, Corsham or the M4 corridor near Chippenham can work for the full two-hour drive from Heathrow. Your chauffeur meets you after customs, the car has Wi-Fi and chargers, and the drop-off is at the office reception rather than a station taxi rank. For day trips, the chauffeur can wait and take you back to Heathrow for your evening flight.
VIP Travellers
Guests staying at Lucknam Park, The Bath Priory or the Royal Crescent Hotel expect the arrival to match the property. An S-Class or Maybach, a chauffeur in a suit, and luggage handled to the door make the difference. We share details only with your assigned chauffeur, and we can coordinate arrival times with the hotel's concierge where you would like us to.
Families with Heavy Luggage
Families visiting Bath for a holiday or a university move-in often travel with large cases, a pushchair and car seats. The V-Class takes up to seven passengers and six or seven large cases. Child seats are fitted in advance, and the chauffeur helps unload at your rental or halls of residence, which is much easier than a train, a taxi and a hill.
International Visitors
International students and visiting academics often arrive at Heathrow heading for the University of Bath or Bath Spa University. Your chauffeur meets you in arrivals, drives directly to Claverton Down, Newton Park or your accommodation, and helps with the luggage. For leisure visitors, we can arrange onward transfers to the Cotswolds, Stonehenge or Bristol.
Woodford Chauffeur Cars vs Taxis vs UK Rail
| Woodford Chauffeur Cars | Standard taxi / minicab | UK rail | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price certainty | Fixed quote: fuel, tolls, congestion charge/ULEZ, parking and VAT included | Metered or surge-priced; extras often added | Advance fares vary; walk-up and peak fares are high |
| Door to door | Yes: from your address to the exact terminal, entrance or lobby | Usually, but few local firms cover long distances well | No: station transfers at both ends |
| Luggage | Carried for you; the V-Class takes 6–7 large cases | Limited boot space in a standard saloon | You carry it, including on stairs and changes |
| Vehicle | Mercedes-Benz E-Class, S-Class and V-Class | Varies widely | Shared carriage; a seat isn't always guaranteed |
| Driver vetting | Licensed, DBS-checked professional chauffeurs | Licensed, but standards vary | Not applicable |
| Delays | Flight tracking and live re-routing around incidents | The driver may cancel or re-price | Strikes, engineering works and cancellations |
| Work & privacy | Quiet private cabin with Wi-Fi for confidential calls | Little privacy | Public carriage; patchy signal |
| On this route | Direct and door to door with one professional chauffeur | A Heathrow taxi metered for 100 miles is expensive and unpredictable, and few drivers know Bath's bus gates and restricted streets well enough to reach your hotel door. | By rail, you would take the Elizabeth line or Heathrow Express to Paddington, then a Great Western Railway train to Bath Spa, followed by a taxi or a walk up the hill with your luggage. Engineering works on the Great Western main line, often at weekends, can involve replacement buses. |

Questions Before You Book
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Your chauffeur tracks your flight in real time, so delays are already accounted for. 60 minutes of free waiting is included from the actual landing time, allowing for immigration and baggage reclaim. If your delay is substantial, we will update the plan and, if you wish, let your Bath hotel know your revised arrival time.
Do you charge more for early-morning or overnight transfers?
Early-morning arrivals from North America and late-night departures are part of our everyday work, and the same chauffeurs and vehicles cover them. Every fare is fixed before you book: early-morning and late-night journeys have no meter, and any peak-time or holiday surcharge is shown on the booking page before you pay. The quote you receive when booking is fixed and includes fuel and Heathrow parking, so the price does not change on the day.
How much luggage can I bring?
The E-Class and S-Class carry up to three passengers with two large cases plus hand luggage. If you are travelling with a family, moving into university accommodation or carrying wedding outfits and gifts, choose the V-Class, which takes up to seven passengers and six or seven large cases.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before your pickup. If your flight time changes, let us know and we will move your collection rather than cancel it. For bookings made by a university department, conference organiser or company travel team, we can confirm changes directly with the booker and send updated details to the traveller.
How long does it take from Heathrow to Bath?
The journey is about 100 miles and usually takes 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours, mostly on the M4. At weekday peaks, or on Friday afternoons in summer, allow 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes. The final approach into the city via the A46 and London Road can add time.
Can you drop us right at our hotel in central Bath?
In most cases, yes. Bath has bus gates and restricted streets, so a few addresses have no vehicle access directly outside. Our chauffeurs know the nearest legal stopping points for hotels around the Royal Crescent, the Circus and Great Pulteney Street, and will help carry luggage the final few metres where needed.
Do you cover the University of Bath and Bath Spa University?
Yes. We regularly carry visiting academics, conference delegates and international students to the University of Bath campus on Claverton Down and Bath Spa University at Newton Park, and back to Heathrow at the end of term. For collections from university buildings or accommodation, a free waiting allowance is included.
How early should I leave Bath for a morning Heathrow flight?
For a 10am long-haul departure, we usually recommend leaving Bath between 5:45am and 6:15am. That allows for the M4 build-up around Reading and gets you to the terminal around three hours before departure. For short-haul flights, you can usually leave 30 to 45 minutes later.
